Brazil’s Circular Economy Strategy Several countries in #LatinAmerica are working on – or already published – their national Circular Economy plans. For Brazil, its brand new National Circular Economy Strategy fits within the new industrialization plan for the country launched at beginning of this year – known as Nova Industria Brasil or NIB. ➡ The Strategy was published last week – and its main aim is to promote “the transition from the linear production model to a circular economy, in order to encourage the efficient use of natural resources and sustainable practices throughout the production chain.” The circular economy is an economic production system that maintains the circular flow of resources and associates economic activity with the circular management of resources, through the addition, retention or recovery of their values, and which is based on the principles of non-generation of waste, circulation of products and materials and regeneration. ➡ The implementing decree calls for the following guidelines for the new Strategy: ·      eliminating pollution and reducing the generation of waste and residues; ·      maintaining the value of materials; ·      regenerating the environment; ·      reducing dependence on natural resources; ·      sustainable production and consumption; ·      extending the life cycle of each and every material; and ·      ensuring a just, inclusive and equitable transition that addresses gender, racial, ethnic and socio-economic disparities. ➡ The Strategy then goes onto set out a longer list of objectives, including creating a regulatory and institutional environment favorable to the circular economy. ➡ On other fronts, the government is working to up the pressure on companies in Brazil to do more “reverse logistics” – Brazil’s term for “extended producer responsibility” – a key part of the circular economy. According to the government, more rules and regulations – and more enforcement around collection and management targets – are around the corner. This at the same time that the national target for EPR for plastic wastes will go from 22% to 30% across the country under national requirements.  📢 The Circular Economy in Brazil could get some enforcement teeth. #circulareconomy #productstewardship #extendedproducerresponsibility #plastics #packaging #waste #ESG #brazil #melonlatam
