#WorldFisheriesDay is the perfect opportunity to revisit the unethical and unlawful conduct of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and their "tinned friends” who worked to fix a monopoly & profit from branded sales of Canadian lobster—at the direct expense of the more responsible U.S. lobster fishery. Canada’s fishery is tied to whale entanglements, ship strikes, resource mismanagement, and rampant poaching. To suggest that their fishery "leads" in any way is knowingly false.
In a just, equitable, and lawful application of a credible standard, all fisheries meeting that standard should have equal access to the marketplace—independent of brand. Why was the MSC creating & publishing content in June 2021 claiming the Canadian lobster fishery was the “best in the world”? Why did this tone-deaf messaging coincide with the launch of Scout Canning, their effectively owned brand, which gained an outsized monopoly on MSC-certified lobster products in markets like Whole Foods Market
Whole Foods not only co-designed Scout's products but leveraged former executives to syndicate venture capital for Scout and promptly banned other sources of lobster to manipulate the marketplace whilst also barring access to superior products and supply chains that would compete with Scout. Hi, Pescavore. The deliberate suspension triggered a cascade of events that has caused irreparable damage to the industry.
I’ve demonstrated the improper exchange of compensation, value-in-kind, and services between Charlotte Langley, the MSC and Scout Canning. I’ve highlighted the inappropriate abetting of Seafood Watch to harass and cripple the Maine Lobster Industry.
"There is no recent evidence that the Maine lobster fishery is responsible for entanglements or interactions with right whales," the MSC stated while suspending certification in December 2022. Yet Gulf of Maine lobster lost its certification while the Canadian fishery continued to operate under a glowing endorsement.
Let’s talk about the video MSC posted in June 2021 & later deleted the audio from on Instagram. Without sound, it looks harmless, but with sound, it’s clear: the MSC is actively sponsoring and promoting content that asserts a currently certified Canadian lobster fishery—with a worse record on whale entanglements, collisions, poaching, and environmental concerns—is more sustainable than the at the time CERTIFIED American fishery & right before revoking the certification without reasonable cause, to fix a monopoly.
And it doesn't end there - MSC actively recruited venture capital to manipulate the marketplace to build, in their own words, "America’s most trusted seafood brand." I could’ve explained to them why $20+ low-quality canned lobster was doomed to fail, but they believed in their scheme and resorted to unconscionable deception to prove it.
Stay tuned for the next chapter in which they leveraged New Hope Network & Forbes to further a scheme that amounts to racketeering.

🍣🍤 FoodTech 500 alum Umami Bioworks launches a pathogen detection tool to support traditional seafood producers.
Singapore-based cultivated fish maker Umami Bioworks launched a pathogen detection tool called Arbiter to improve safety and quality in the seafood industry. Arbiter can detect up to 800 unique pathogens in under six hours, providing a faster, more cost-effective solution for food safety.
The Arbiter tool enables seafood companies to detect pathogens early, reducing labor demands and preventing potential economic losses. It also supports health monitoring for key species like salmon and shrimp, helping protect aquatic ecosystems and drive sustainability.
According to Umami’s CEO, Mihir Pershad, Arbiter was initially developed to streamline quality testing for their cultivated seafood production. Recognizing its broader potential, Umami launched it as an independent product. This move aligns with Umami’s mission to enhance the food system by supporting traditional seafood methods while advancing cultivated seafood, aiming to build trust and encourage industry adoption of new approaches.
