This is another strong reflection of the critical importance of LNG to energy security in Japan. Through the second half of the 2020s, the country will look to import 12 "emergency needs" cargoes of LNG a year - up from the three cargoes it currently acquires. #lng #naturalgas #energysecurity

In our recent article, "Debunking the Hype: Putting the U.S. LNG Approval Pause into Perspective," we delve into the implications of the White House's consideration to lift the pause on LNG export approvals. While initially labeled 'hypothetical,' this development prompts a critical examination of its potential market, commercial, and strategic impacts. We dissect the short-term ramifications, highlighting the minimal immediate impact on U.S. LNG export outlook if the pause is lifted in 1H 2025. Our analysis navigates through regulatory risks, project delays, and commercial viability, shedding light on the nuanced dynamics at play. Moreover, we explore the potential outcomes of a longer-term pause, delving into its lasting implications on domestic and global gas dynamics. Key questions arise, from the impact on global LNG supply-demand balance to implications on energy transition plans. While increased LNG capacity might offer relief for global supply and hence pricing, it is less favourable for #ArgentinaLNG initiatives. The competitiveness of #LNG from #Argentina appears tough already, and with an additional 90 mtpa capacity beyond the 130 mtpa scheduled to come on stream between 2025 and 2027, Argentina's LNG projects may face heightened hurdles. It’s a pivotal moment for stakeholders to assess whether Argentina can carve out a sustainable niche in this rapidly shifting landscape. #EnergyTransition #GlobalMarkets #NaturalGas

Ukraine Purchases First U.S. LNG Shipment via Greece The Financial Times reported on December 27, 2024, that Ukraine had purchased liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States for the first time. According to the article, Ukraine has indicated its intention to switch to importing U.S. LNG, following the example of European countries, in order to completely sever its dependence on Russian fossil fuels. Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK, received the LNG via the Mediterranean and it arrived at Greece’s LNG terminal on Friday, December 27, 2024. DTEK had signed an LNG transport contract with the U.S. company Venture Global in June. Under this agreement, DTEK’s purchases are set to continue until the end of 2026. The two companies have also entered into a separate 20-year LNG purchase agreement.

Japan has been the diamond standard for LNG buyers not so many years ago. That was before China and the giant sucking sound coming from it emerged on the market. That was also before Europe woke up to the urgent need for super-chilled gas to replace piped gas from Russia. That was also before LNG went beyond being only a source of power and heat. 15 years ago, when you had LNG to sell you knew that if a Japanese buyer showed up, it was not going to get a lot better. Today, sellers have a lot more options. Buyers don't like that. Welcome to the bottom of the world. https://lnkd.in/dFjcGTan

#Japan is exploring #LNG procurement partnerships with #SouthKorea and #Italy to boost flexibility and energy security. JERA Co., Inc. and Korea Gas Corporation(KOGAS) are collaborating on joint procurement and cargo swaps, aiming to strengthen LNG cooperation. Additionally, Japan’s state-backed Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) has signed a preliminary agreement with Italy’s Eni to collaborate on LNG procurement as Eni seeks investors for its LNG projects. Japanese buyers are pushing for more flexible, shorter-term LNG contracts with resale options to manage domestic demand fluctuations. Japan is also ramping up its #LNGtrading activities, with Tokyo Gas Asia Pte. Ltd. already working with partners for joint procurement. In preparation for the winter heating season, Jera is tasked to secure monthly LNG cargoes for Japan’s Strategic LNG Buffer (SBL) from December to February. This ensures the country is well-prepared for potential energy needs during the colder months. #Japan #LNG #Trading Follow Kepler Search and www.keplersearch.com for #commoditiesjobs, #tradingjobs, #lngjobs, #energyjobs and news in #oilandgas, #metals, #renewableenergy, #commodities, #trading and more. https://lnkd.in/gJD2zpFR

Who would have guessed? Anyone looking at the map where Arctic LNG is situated would be hard-pressed to ask what doing anything in those conditions might actually cost. More than 15 years ago there was a long article in the German Stern magazine detailing how producing oil and gas on the Yamal peninsula is the mother of all nightmares and way too expensive for the market to bear. Might it be that Novatek speculated on sky-high LNG prices forever to run their scheme? If they did, they were in good company. The world is riddled with hyper-expensive LNG projects mostly in the Asia Pacific region but those are being dealt with as is. In today's Russia, if Arctic LNG powers down for once, it likely ceases production forever. https://lnkd.in/d8YQAFjx
