Japan has been the diamond standard for LNG buyers not so many years ago. That was before China and the giant sucking sound coming from it emerged on the market. That was also before Europe woke up to the urgent need for super-chilled gas to replace piped gas from Russia. That was also before LNG went beyond being only a source of power and heat. 15 years ago, when you had LNG to sell you knew that if a Japanese buyer showed up, it was not going to get a lot better. Today, sellers have a lot more options. Buyers don't like that. Welcome to the bottom of the world. https://lnkd.in/dFjcGTan

This is another strong reflection of the critical importance of LNG to energy security in Japan. Through the second half of the 2020s, the country will look to import 12 "emergency needs" cargoes of LNG a year - up from the three cargoes it currently acquires. #lng #naturalgas #energysecurity

Global natural gas demand is increasing, yet the U.S. LNG permit pause limits the ability of America – the world's leading LNG exporter – to meet the moment. The LNG pause should be lifted in its entirety, supporting American workers and our allies overseas: https://lnkd.in/ePfghvxG

🇪🇺 LNG prices rise in Europe Energy prices in Europe rose sharply amid concerns over Russian gas supplies via pipeline through Ukraine, adding to volatility in gas and power markets. Gas futures are trading near their highest levels this year. Electricity prices in Germany and France have followed gas prices. Market anxiety is high despite the fact that pipeline gas supplies from Russia continue through the Sudja metering station. What is also important for EU energy balance – are extensive maintenance works that will begin at gas facilities in Norway later this month. Europe's competition with Asia for LNG supplies could further tighten the market. LNG imports to Europe fell sharply in July, while Asia received the most monthly U.S. shipments since 2021, according to ship tracking data. Lower LNG demand in Asia this month, due in part to lower temperatures and geopolitical risks in the Middle East, is changing the profitability of LNG transportation routes, "opening up the potential to divert more cargoes from the U.S. to Europe." Competition for LNG remains fierce. #EU #Asia #LNG

The newest installment of our working history series highlights the promise and challenges of getting Canadian Natural Gas supplies to global markets. Written in 2006 Angela Tu suggests that even a small change in tolling arrangements, and interprovincial energy cooperation could go a long way towards resolving the bottlenecks. Remarkably, so many years later, little has changed and the US is leading the charge become a leading supplier of LNG to our allies, representing almost 50% of total LNG imports in 2023.

About 60% of global LNG imports in 2023 came from only three countries — Australia, Qatar and the U.S. — sometimes dubbed the “LNG Trinity.” All three want to consolidate and potentially grow their global presence at a time when markets are experiencing uncertainty regarding future LNG demand. In today’s blog, we look at the differences within the LNG Trinity and how they may impact — and be impacted by — developments in the global gas market. https://lnkd.in/gRHPEvd2

The Japanese understand #energysecurity and they are willing to invest in it big time...purchasing 12 extra cargo's a year for emergency back up supply to have a buffer against any future price shocks... [...] Japan is expanding its role as an LNG trader at a time of falling domestic demand overall for the fuel, but in a plan to boost energy security, it trades some cargoes that are not wanted at home during periods of weak demand. From last December, Japan's top power generator, JERA, has bought one LNG cargo for each of the winter months, or a total of three for the year, to add to a 'Strategic Buffer LNG' (SBL) run by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). China using these resources will sell you all the climate change fighting electrical cable, stoves and cars you don't need. :-)
