Commenting on the global concern about the impact of social media and the handling of fake news, SMU Associate Professor of Computer Science Feida Zhu noted that technologies linking online identities to individuals are not unique to China; other countries are exploring similar measures. He believes these measures can effectively trace the sources of fake news and enhance social security, rather than merely engaging in broad surveillance. Assoc Prof Zhu emphasised that network identity authentication is a tool, and its effectiveness depends on how governments use it.
