We just announced the winners of our 2021 Challenge "Carbon-to-Value"! Back then, Carbon Dioxide Removal was a niche even in climate tech. But even in that niche, we chose to depart from the most prominent approaches like the Elon Musk Carbon Removal XPRIZE or Stripe's Frontier Climate, an advance purchase for carbon removal. Instead of focusing predominantly on permanence of storage for 1,000 years, we called for technologies that would incorporate the removed carbon in long-lasting and valuable products. That way, we aimed to build a bridge to large scale commercial deployment of these technologies. Otherwise, we feared, removing CO2 from the atmosphere will fall short of the required scale, as removing CO2 has no private value in itself and might see too little investor interest as a consequence. The three teams that outcompeted more than 70 competitors and made it to the final stage of the Challenge demonstrate how atmospheric CO2 can be incorporated into concrete and long-lasting engineering plastics! With our finalist teams so heterogeneous but with loads of potential, the jury couldn't decide on one winner. We therefore have three winners of the SPRIND Challenge "Carbon-to-Value"! I am immensely proud of the achievements of the 3 teams: Team Carbo Culture led by Christopher Carstens and Matt Mallory (he/him) Team MacroCarbon led by Dr. Mar Fernández-Méndez and Jason Cole Team enaDyne led by Philipp Hahn and Christian Koch Congratulations to all teams for a well deserved win! Many thanks to an awesome jury that not only selected the teams but also gave valuable advise to support the teams' development: Carlos Haertel, Anne Lamp, Dr. Henrik Pontzen, Richard Templer & Mark Hartney All info on this Challenge is available at https://lnkd.in/eR-PC9Yv SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen Rafael Laguna de la Vera Marie-Cathérine Arnold OLY Julia Ebenauer Sebastian Berns

Congrats to my friends and collaborators at MacroCarbon, one of the three winning teams of the Carbon-to-Value challenge by SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen. Out of more than 70 competitors, MacroCarbon was the only winning company providing an ocean-based solution for transforming CO2 - at scale - into a variety of industrial inputs. Seaweed farming is the fastest-growing aquaculture sector. MacroCarbon is aiming to turbocharge the sector, through an integrated aquaculture/refinery model that can be set up in places you couldn't grow seaweed in before. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐈 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲: 🔷 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 & 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: when we think of seaweed farming, anchored lines and complicated systems usually come to mind. By specializing in floating seaweeds like Sargassum and Ulva, they create a much simpler (and cost effective) system for growing seaweed biomass at scale, that's less dependent on harming the ocean floor, erosion-prone beaches, or wild ecosystems. 🔷 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: they're experts at knowing which native Pelagic (floating) species to breed and how; experts at integrating these farms into existing infrastructure like ports and fisheries; and experts at turning that into valuable, fossil-free inputs like long-lived plastics or Sustainable Aviation Fuels. MacroCarbon creates the pathways for a #blueeconomy hub in many places! 🔷 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Seaweeds grow from excess nitrogen and phosphorus. In knowing how to set up these farms in point-sources for runoff, MacroCarbon helps avoid uncontrolled algal blooms and dead zones that deplete the ocean of oxygen. On top of that, they provide a coastal habitat for other species - at a time where wild habitats like coral reefs and seagrass are under stress.
