Air France-KLM and TotalEnergies Sign Major SAF Agreement to Accelerate Aviation Decarbonization Insights: 1. Significant SAF Agreement: • Air France-KLM has entered into a landmark agreement with TotalEnergies to supply up to 1.5 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over a 10-year period, marking one of the largest SAF purchase contracts for the airline group. 2. Leading Role in SAF Usage: • Air France-KLM was the world’s leading user of SAF in 2022 and 2023, accounting for 17% and 16% of total global SAF production, respectively, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable aviation practices. 3. Decarbonization Goals: • The agreement aligns with Air France-KLM’s goal to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer by 30% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels, through a combination of fleet renewal, operational efficiencies, and a commitment to using at least 10% SAF on all flights. 4. Sustainable Sourcing Practices: • The SAF supplied will be derived from waste and residues, produced in TotalEnergies’ biorefineries and refineries across France and Europe. Air France-KLM has implemented strict sourcing policies to ensure that only second-generation SAF, which does not compete with food production, is used. 5. Environmental Impact: • SAF has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 75% and up to 90% over its entire lifecycle compared to conventional fossil fuels, making it a critical component of the aviation sector’s decarbonization strategy. 6. Long-Term Partnership: • The collaboration between TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM spans over a decade, with previous initiatives including experimental flights using SAF and joint efforts to develop a French SAF production industry. 7. Investments in SAF Production: • TotalEnergies is heavily investing in SAF production facilities across France, including a 400 million euro transformation of the Grandpuits site to produce 210,000 tons of SAF by 2025 and expansions at its Gonfreville refinery to reach 160,000 tons per year by 2025. 8. Commitment to Energy Independence: • The partnership is viewed as crucial for enhancing Europe’s energy sovereignty and independence through the development of a robust SAF sector capable of meeting the aviation industry’s needs. 9. Future Developments: • TotalEnergies plans to continue expanding its SAF production capabilities, including studying co-processing methods in its European refineries by 2025, further supporting the aviation sector’s transition to sustainable fuels. This agreement signals a significant step forward in the aviation industry’s efforts to decarbonize and highlights the importance of collaboration between energy and transportation sectors in addressing climate change.

The aviation industry’s commitment to carbon reduction underscores the need for investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which provides the most promising solution to achieving net-zero carbon by 2050. With the right policies and financial structures, SAF could help the industry fuel 65% of this reduction. This prospect was the focus of our recent workshop “Fueling The Future: Accelerating Sustainable Aviation Fuel in the Southeast.” See takeaways from our own Titiksha Fernandes, Ph.D. and learn more about how the Southeast has the promise to emerge as a hub for SAF production. ECONOMIC - Shaking up the aviation industry, California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) is pressuring airlines with a new initiative demanding a shift toward sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). With a bold target of 200 million gallons by 2035, CARB is pushing for a tenfold jump in SAF use, aiming to cover 40% of the state’s intrastate flight fuel demand. But not everyone’s on board—other states are already gearing up to challenge these state-level mandates. For investors eyeing renewable fuels, the implications are huge, especially with industry players like Darling Ingredients and Valero Energy Inc. locking in fresh contracts to supply SAF to major hubs like JFK and Chicago Midway. The stakes are high, and California's lead could reshape how quickly the rest of the U.S. adopts SAF. Is this California ambition too high-flying, or is it setting a new standard? Queensland is Australia’s hub for the development of sustainable aviation fuels, and the industry just got a major boost in the newly proposed federal budget! The federal government has proposed investing $1.7 billion over the next decade in the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund, which would allow the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to commercialize low-carbon liquid fuels and other net-zero innovations. 🎉 This is fabulous news for Queenslanders who are working to build a better, decarbonized economy that is good for the environment and job creation. And it sends a signal to the world that Queensland is an excellent place to invest in that future. None of this comes out of the blue. Since 2016, Queensland has been pursuing a roadmap to support and attract investment to the biofutures industry, which uses ingredients such as sugarcane, algae, or even captured CO2 to create eco-friendly fuel, foods, and chemical alternatives. The accomplishments are piling up: Oceania Biofuels’ $500 million aviation-fuel biorefinery in Gladstone is scheduled to begin operations next year; Queensland created a partnership with Qantas Airways last year to nurture the sustainable-aviation-fuel sector domestically; and Jet Zero Australia is planning a facility in Far North Queensland that could produce 100 million litres of fuel a year. The federal government’s announced budget support would amplify these and other initiatives and pave the way for fuel-certification standards and other regulatory guideposts. https://bit.ly/3K7zh0Y #Queensland #CleanEnergy #Aviation Justin McGowan GAICD Gabe Sulkes Joanna Olivera

The ambitious Green Fuels Hamburg project, initially set to produce 10,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2026, has been terminated, according to the Hamburg Senate. The consortium behind the project, which included Uniper, Siemens Energy, Airbus, and Sasol EcoFT, announced it would no longer pursue the initiative. Launched in 2022, the project aimed to establish a SAF production plant in Hamburg’s industrial regions of Billbrook and Rothenburgsort, with support from Hamburg University of Technology, the city’s senate, and Hamburg Airport. Emirates had also expressed interest in sourcing PtL-SAF from this venture. The reasons for the project's cancellation have not been disclosed. However, Senate members are concerned about meeting SAF demand as the EU Refuel regulations come into effect on January 1, 2025. Stephan Jersch, environmental policy spokesperson, highlighted the potential shortfall, noting that Hamburg Airport will require approximately 7,000 tonnes of SAF in 2025, with current supply options still undetermined.
