Exciting news for all Australians, and particularly those living in the #Gippsland Renewable Energy Zone! Six innovative #offshore #wind projects this week secured feasibility licences to advance in Australia's first declared offshore wind zone in the waters off Gippsland, Victoria. This marks a significant step towards realising the region's potential of renewable wind energy. The selected projects - #HighSeaWind, Gippsland Skies, #BlueMackerelNorth, #Kut-Wut Brataualung, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1, and Star of the South Wind Farm - will now conduct detailed environmental and geotechnical assessments. This progress comes as a result of a highly competitive process, with these projects chosen from a pool of 37 applications for the 15,000 square kilometre zone. Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen highlighted earlier this week the overwhelming market response, noting the bids received were 32 times more than the initial ask. This underscoring the significant potential for renewable energy generation in Victoria (and potentially in the other Renewable Energy Zones around Australia). This initiative propels us closer to Australia's #renewable #energy goals and is poised to create 1000s of jobs over time, contributing significantly to the local economy and sustainability efforts. As we move forward, the Australian Renewables Academy believes that the #Gippsland community must play a crucial role in shaping these developments, ensuring that its voice is integral in the planning and implementation phases. And so should be the case for the other #regional communities sitting within each #RenewableEnergyZone. https://lnkd.in/gzAWjwuk #RenewableEnergy #WindEnergy #Sustainability #Innovation #AustralianRenewablesAcademy #GippslandWindProjects

Some exciting developments in Australia. Offshore Wind is a step closer to reality in Australia and geographically a step closer to New Zealand as well.

Delighted with the official granting of the first round of offshore wind feasibility licences in Australia 🇦🇺 off the Gippsland coast of Victoria and, of course, including the Star of the South. Surprisingly, it does seem like only yesterday (it was September 2012) that Terry Kallis, Peter Sgardelis and I unravelled a fishing map on our car bonnet at the Toora Wind Farm car park and looked out to Bass Strait dreaming of the future. We would have been rapt if our humble little project got a chance to one day be built, but today’s announcement suggests that an offshore wind industry, not a single project, has finally crystallised in Australia. We’ve seen five prime ministers come and go, but somehow we lasted. Big day! A big thank you to Terry and Pete for your vision, resilience and bloody-mindedness since that day in September 2012. A further big thank you to our partners Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners for taking the chance in late 2017 and backing us and Australia. To the SOTS team, delivering the project now, congratulations for being a little part of history. Thanks to the local Gippsland communities that have embraced us for over a decade and the many others, local and international, who’ve been along for the journey. Also thanks to the many Commonwealth and State ministers, representatives and advisors who always politely listened to us and never told us to go away. We’ve progressed a long way since the early days a decade ago, when we were (respectfully) called a ‘concept and a PowerPoint’. Now onto New South Wales, where we hope that our Oceanex Energy and Equinor partnership can help transform the State’s energy, jobs and investment markets, starting with the Novocastrian Offshore Wind Farm which hopefully will be successful in receiving a Feasibility Licence in coming months. Let’s see what the next 12 years brings….. #offshorewind #gippsland #starofthesouth #blessed #planetwind

🧐 Interested to see how the Gunaikurnai are involved in the consenting process and EIA’s for the Gippsland feasibility OW plans over the next 12-24 months. 🇦🇺 Unsure if the proposed IPA Plan in the area stretches far enough but, it would be a good framework to consider when supporting the First Nations cultural values and the identification of threats to those values. 🌏 The preservation of cultural heritage and values and the commitment to working with onshore communities, particularly where there are indigenous and spiritual connections to the land and seascape, is as important as any financial or feasibility constraint when considering a development. Whilst discussing the EIA’s for all the proposed development sites in AUS… The survey/geo investigations and impact assessments are going to be huge pieces of work to land!! 🤯 #australianwind #ausauction #ausoffshorewind #australia #netzero #offshorewind #feasibility #culturalheritage #culturalpreservation #onshorecommunities #eia #consenting
Thank you, Australia! We’ve been awarded a feasibility licence for our first Australian offshore wind project off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria – and the Australian government also intends to grant a licence for our second project, subject to consultation. “With more than 30 years of experience and unparalleled expertise in large-scale offshore wind projects, we’re pleased to be awarded licences to help launch Australia’s new industry and accelerate the nation’s green energy transition,” said Per Mejnert Kristensen, CEO of Region APAC at Ørsted. We’ll develop this project with a view to bid in future auctions run by the Victorian State Government.

More good news for offshore wind proponents down under, with the Hon Chris Bowen (Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy) yesterday announcing six bidders have won feasibility licences for Australia’s first offshore wind farm zone off Gippsland, in Victoria. High Sea Wind, Gippsland Skies, Blue Mackerel North, Kut-Wut Brataualung, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1 and Star of the South Wind Farm, have all been selected to proceed, after submitting applications last year. The government also intends on granting a further six licences to Iberdrola Australia OW 2 (for its Aurora Green wind farm), Greater Gippsland 2 OWP Project (Gippsland Dawn), Navigator North Project, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1 (Gippsland 02), Kent Offshore Wind and Great Eastern Offshore Wind Farm Project Co. Strong and reliable offshore winds and bringing to market large-scale projects means offshore wind farms would provide a significant and reliable source of dispatchable power into Australia’s energy system. Offshore wind projects can be located near key power producing regions, which would reduce the need for additional transmission lines. Australia’s low-carbon economy is beaconing, and offshore wind projects will contribute by generating new jobs and economic development, in particular in some regional centres. #Australia's abundant solar and onshore wind has made it a latecomer to offshore #wind. But it's making up for lost time 🌬 🌬 🌬 Since May, it has issued 12 feasibility licences to the industry's biggest developers, covering 25GW of potential capacity off its Victorian coast. 🔵 One of them is Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, whose new Southerly Ten developer is planning to invest up to A$20bn across its two projects, including Australia's most developed offshore wind project - Star of the South. 🔵 World Bank studies show Australia’s technical offshore wind capacity is the highest in APAC and more than double the industry's global leader, China. 🔵 But its distance from established supply chains, competition from more established markets and questions over pricing emerge as early challenges. Thanks to Charles Rattray and Tim Buckley for their insights. Six offshore wind projects have secured feasibility licenses for Australia's first offshore wind zone off Gippsland, bringing the nation's renewable energy goals closer to reality. Charles Rattray, CEO of Southerly Ten, whose company received two licenses, highlighted the strong community support in Gippsland for these initiatives. The winning projects include High Sea Wind, Gippsland Skies, Blue Mackerel North, Kut-Wut Brataualung, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1, and Star of the South Wind Farm. These licenses enable developers to conduct environmental assessments, geotechnical surveys, and further consultations. Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, will announce this development at the Energy Users of Australia Association annual conference. He noted the overwhelming response to the offshore wind zone, with 37 applications for the 15,000 square kilometer area off Gippsland. The government plans to issue six additional licenses to Iberdrola Australia OW 2, Greater Gippsland 2 OWP Project, Navigator North Project, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1 (Gippsland 02), Kent Offshore Wind, and Great Eastern Offshore Wind Farm Project Co., pending revisions to their applications to avoid project overlaps. Unfortunately, 25 other applicants, including Floatation Energy's Seadragon project, were not granted licenses, despite prior federal recognition. #AustraliaOffshoreWind #GippslandWindZone #AustraliaEnergy Source: ABC News Australia

8moLets be frank. Mr Bowen hasn’t got “bids for 19,000 megawatts” He has 6 competitors interested in investigating the feasibility of producing power in Gippsland coast. The licence grants an option to be involved. Its a 7 year foot hold in which to decide.
