Last Friday, I had the privilege of being invited as a guest speaker by our mentor, Shawn Flynn, to share insights with his community about the work culture here in the Philippines, especially in comparison to Silicon Valley. While Filipino work culture is deeply rooted in deference and respect for authority—often seen as more hierarchical compared to the flatter structure of Silicon Valley—I emphasized how leaders can nurture empathy, open communication, and assertiveness within Filipino teams. Filipinos are highly adaptable and receptive to different leadership styles. ❤️ My advice? If you’re setting up a company here or planning to hire Filipinos, focus on cultivating the right culture from the start. Consistently foster empathy, open communication, and assertiveness during the first 6 to 12 months. It takes time for most Filipinos to feel comfortable opening up and expressing themselves freely, but once they do, you'll create a more collaborative and dynamic work environment. Who knows, you might even find yourself singing karaoke with us! It’s more fun in the Philippines, after all!
