[ 🌿 Meet AWARE-EU Leaders #1 ] Meet Professor Elena Mente, Fish Nutrition and Physiology Expert In this video, Professor Elena Mente from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) takes us inside her work for the AWARE project. With a focus on developing innovative, species-specific fish feeds, Elena’s research is paving the way for sustainable aquaponics systems. 🔬Her team is working on creating specialized diets that incorporate recycled waste from aquaponics, including insect meal, to replace traditional fish meal. This cutting-edge approach not only meets the nutritional needs of the fish but also supports plant growth within the system. 🌿As she explains, aquaponics requires a delicate balance—ensuring the fish feed satisfies both the fish and plants’ requirements. Watch to learn more about how Elena and her team are revolutionizing sustainable aquaculture! #AWARE #Aquaponics #ReclaimedWater #AquacultureEurope

[Science Letter] Explore our in-depth analysis on sustainable aquaculture and its critical role in global food security and learn about innovative solutions and policy recommendations. #SustainableAquaculture #GlobalFoodSecurity #EnvironmentalSustainability In collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research, Norway, the International Atomic Energy Agency, Monaco and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia, this research has been published in the prestigious Science Journal, which has a 5-year impact factor of 50.3. Reimagining aquaculture in the Global South Aquaculture has been crucial for millennia and now plays a key role in global food security. However, current fish feed production harms coastal ecosystems and local fishers, particularly in the Global South, by overharvesting small fish vital to ecosystems and local diets. These fish are often redirected from human consumption to fish meal for livestock and aquaculture, impacting food security in places like Bangladesh, Gambia, and Ghana. To support the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, sustainable aquaculture strategies are essential. This includes advancing water recirculation, offshore innovations, responsible fish feed ingredients, and effective policies for sustainable development and human nutrition. Policies should focus on seawater quality, biodiversity protection, comprehensive sustainability assessments, and improved feed production. Link to the article : https://lnkd.in/gzWNZCeP

🌟 Blue worms: A small step towards sustainable aquaculture! 🌟 We would like to share a picture from our current lab experiment, where we are taking our very first step toward developing a new vaccine strategy against Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome (RTFS) for rainbow trout using white worms. Our team member Dennis Grantland is using fruit color to study food uptake and elimination in white worms under various conditions. This research is part of our LiveFishHealth project, which aims to develop an alternative to the use of antibiotics in organic rainbow trout farming, enhancing both environmental and economic sustainability. Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome is a major challenge in the early life stages of rainbow trout, often necessitating multiple antibiotic treatments due to high mortality rates. In their natural habitat, rainbow trout are predatory, feeding on a variety of live organisms. However, in aquaculture, they start their lives on dry feed. Incorporating live feed not only aligns with their natural dietary habits but has also been shown to enhance robustness and reduce mortality among other species of farmed fish during their early life stages. The project LiveFishHealth is part of the new Organic RDD9 projects funded by ICROFS - International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems, and you can learn more about our project here: https://lnkd.in/db4FgDPy Stay tuned as we innovate for healthier, more sustainable aquaculture practices! 🐟🌱 Institut for Ecoscience - Aarhus Universitet, DTU - Technical University of Denmark, ÅDAL ØRRED, FISHLAB, Birte Brorson #Aquaculture #Sustainability #Innovation #LiveFishHealth #RainbowTrout
