Something profound is happening. Developments in Quantum Technology (QT) are picking up pace, and for those of us who have been paying attention to milestone attainment over time, it’s really palpable! Naysayers may need the facts laid out before them like a breakfast buffet to change their tune. The article below is one of the closest things to that which I’ve read. For those who simply skim LinkedIn posts, let me just point to a few facts here: ·        Some of the leading QT companies, like IBM and Quantinuum, have been brave enough to publish roadmaps showing their planned paths/deliverables years ahead.   ·        Consistent deliveries on those public roadmaps suggest that The Quantum Era is not some nebulous notion in some uncertain future ahead of us; it’s a calculable length of time away, and I feel confident saying that without pointing to a big margin of error.   ·        And what if those roadmaps are actually coming to pass sooner than priorly advertised? That’s when we really need to shift gears, societally and industrially, because getting ready for The Quantum Era isn’t going to happen overnight! Last week I highlighted the only practical application of quantum simulation I have seen reported in the Norwegian public sphere, by way of a brief summary of work done at Ruter As, the Norwegian public transport system. What was most interesting to me was the project leader’s emphasis on the importance of ECOSYSTEMIC READINESS. We’re not just talking about access to quantum hardware (which in itself may be a significant bottleneck sooner than we think), but tailored software development, data engineering, data processing, systems integration, etc. Piecing all this together will be NECESSARY in order to compete in the near future - across so many industrial and societal realms! Where is the public recognition of this? More importantly, where are the practical preparations? If we want access to rapidly developing ecosystems of future value creation, we need to get moving NOW! I wish I could attend The IEEE International Conference on Quantum Computing and Engineering, or IEEE Quantum Week in the coming days. The pace of change that is set to be unveiled there will probably see gear sticks changed across the globe, and I worry that we will fall behind if we do not follow suit – with some haste! Quantinuum is now opening access to their next-generation Helios system, set to be unveiled in 2025, which will have 96 physical qubits, capable of supporting 50 logical qubits, which will “start to unlock scientific discovery only possible with reliable quantum computers.” Classical computers are, in other words, already surpassed in this realm. The Quantum Conundrum: A Solution in Search of a Problem? The post of Nicolas Blanchon made me think of the quantum computing industry in general. And I find that quantum computing finds itself in quite an interesting situation. As any other, the quantum industry needs to answer the following questions: What are the potential benefits of quantum computing? What are the challenges to commercializing quantum computing? What are the most promising areas for quantum computing applications? Is the current investment in quantum computing justified? We know that quantum computing is a seemingly promising technological field that has attracted billions of dollars in investment in recent years. But there seems to be a problem: no one knows how to turn those investments into practical applications. Last month Google launched a competition with a $5 million prize fund for the best application of powerful quantum computers (https://lnkd.in/eDhH2A8y). The goal is to find practical (or at least potentially practical) uses for this technology. Sure, like other industry players, Google claims that quantum computing could be used to quickly synthesize new drugs, develop innovative batteries, or even achieve ultra-desired nuclear fusion. But at the same time, the corporation itself admits that the current practical use of quantum computers is limited to solving abstract mathematical problems (albeit extremely complex and advanced ones). Moreover, while quantum computing steadily attracted a billion or two in investments from tech giants and non-profit organizations up until 2023, the investment started to decline shifting to AI solutions. For example, in the US market, investments in quantum technology fell from $1.4 billion in 2022 to just $240 million in 2023 (https://lnkd.in/eKk6w7pb). Now with the new initiative of Microsoft and OpenAI (https://lnkd.in/eSTpB3bi), the investments will rise again, and one might hope that we see a super-promising and potentially groundbreaking technology soon to be used in our everyday lives. But after billions of dollars worth of investments over many years, we see industry leaders seeking solutions of how to use this technology (even asking the public to come up with such ideas, the Google case).  In previous times usually, humanity encountered a problem, and then bright minds found a solution. Nowadays, it seems to have been reverted: the solution has been invented, but now we need to come up with a problem.
