One year on, the recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle has been a long and ongoing process for many farmers and growers on the East Coast. We visited Ray Munn, a Hawkes Bay farmer whose land was badly impacted, to hear about his journey to rebuild, what helped in the days immediately following the cyclone, and what he learnt from the experience.

It's amazing - 26 years of cleaning up the #rivers in the Roaring Fork Watershed! We couldn't do it without the thousands of volunteers who have participated in the last 26 years. If you're in the Roaring Fork Valley during #earthweek, why not recruit some friends and family members to help clean up a section of the Fryingpan, Roaring Fork or Crystal rivers? #Watersheds need spring cleaning, too! More information about the 26th annual Fryingpan & Beyond River Cleanup, including a link to register, can be found at https://lnkd.in/g-Hmvgwf. #explore #value #protect #rivercleanup

Great news for Oregon rivers! The @NOAAFisheries Coastal Resilience Fund just awarded $8.1 million to @WildSalmonCenter for 11 #CoastCohoPartnership projects in the Nehalem, Siletz, Siuslaw, Coos, and Coquille watersheds. All will improve life for threatened Oregon Coast coho salmon runs. Together, they'll: -Restore 494 acres of tidal wetland habitat; -Improve 145.5 acres of instream, non-tidal wetland and/or off-channel habitat; -Enhance 86.5 acres of riparian habitat, including 1.3 miles of livestock exclusion fencing; and -Reconnect 9.3 miles of streams for salmon. And more great news! NOAA's award will also support the expansion of the #CoastCohoPartnership's work into the South Umpqua, Alsea, and Sixes watersheds. We can't wait to get to work for wild fish and the people who love them. (Photo: Drift Creek, Siletz watershed. Credit: David Herasimtschuk.)

The Fight For Survival…. As Yellowstone returns to our screens, its powerful portrayal of ranching life goes beyond gripping drama. The series underscores the deep trust between ranchers and their horses—partners who endure long days of work and face life-threatening challenges with their riders. This trust mirrors the reliance farmers have on the land and their communities, a bond that’s now under threat in the UK. The Dutton family’s horses are not just tools; they are trusted companions, showcasing how vital these animals are in both fiction and reality. Their loyalty and skill serve as a reminder of the centuries-old connection humans have shared with horses, whether herding cattle or defending livelihoods. Similarly, British farmers fighting in London today face pressures that jeopardize the very traditions that make agriculture sustainable. Horses are a symbol of resilience in Yellowstone, just as farmers stand resilient in their fight against the budget changes impacting Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR). These changes threaten to dismantle family farms, a legacy built on trust—not only with horses but with the land and future generations. As we admire the grace and power of horses on Yellowstone, let’s support the real-world ranchers and farmers who rely on this bond, advocating for fair policies that preserve their way of life. #Aboutlastweekend, this is my favorite photo from our morning cleanup, Saturday, April 27, on the Ribault River. Capt. Sam Baker of Sol Margin Fishing & Conservation Foundation had just assisted a youth in catching this fish. I'm not an angler but he called it "a red." Our family from South Carolina said it looked like a spot. I don't know what its name, but before my plant-based lifestyle I called it good food. The look on the Captain's face reminds me of hearing a youngster say, "I did it!" I imagine that's the sentiment every time you have waited expectantly on fish to bite your hook and then, suddenly, it does! Capt. Baker loves nature. He loves fishing, loves the environment, and he loves teaching others about what he loves. Now he has a band of supporters, including us at the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Community Trust, Inc., who want to help him help the community sustain our culture by returning the river to a healthy state. He and Kristopher Smith of the #RibaultSportsmenAssociation, working with the St. Johns Riverkeeper and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Jacksonville, know that a #resilientribault means a #resilientcommunity of #GullahGeechee people who can maintain their #culture through #subsistencefishing and passing down #fishingtraditions to the next generation. #Environmentalconservation is #culturalconservation. Intervening in the #climatecrisis includes providing tools that communities in its path can use to become #sustainable. I'm looking forward to helping Gullah/Geechee people maintain our culture, despite the odds. When the right opportunities bite, we'll reel them in and then we can say, "We did it!" Did you know Orangutans share 97% of their DNA with humans 🤝 And yet we don’t look at them the same way. 🇮🇩 Around 24 million hectares of rainforest were destroyed in Indonesia between 1990 and 2015, according to official figures from the Indonesian government. 🇬🇧 That’s an area the size of the UK. 🦧 Only 14,000 Sumatran orangutans and just 800 Tapanuli orangutans remain in the wild. I’m a big fan of organisations that work on the ground with the people who understand the land. 💪🏻 The Sumatran Orangutan Society is one of these. Their mission is to protect orangutans, their forests, and their future. And they work with local partners in orangutan landscapes towards their vision of wild orangutans thriving in resilient forests. They support the long-term conservation of these globally important rainforests through progressive, community-based conservation programmes, which address and overcome local pressures on orangutans by engaging forest-edge communities in grassroots conservation action. And their work works: 🌳 Supported regeneration of over 2,000 hectares of orangutan habitat through planting more than 2 million trees. 🧕🏽 Championed forest-edge communities and engaged more than 7,000 people in conservation action through their frontline partners. 👏🏻 Supported Yayasan Orangutan Sumatera Lestari (Orangutan Information Centre) to grow from a small, grassroots volunteer group into an internationally-recognised conservation organisation with over 100 staff. 🦧 Supported the establishment of the foremost orangutan rescue unit in Sumatra, saving over 200 orangutans so far. 👨🏼⚖️ Contributed to tackling the link between international trade and deforestation, including advocating for stronger regulations on sustainable palm oil, and successful calls for EU legislative reform. And now you can support them continue and expand their work. They’ve just launched their Rewild Fund 🌱 read more below! Reach out to Emma Cowley to get involved! #Rainforest #Climate #Environment #Rewilding #Biodiversity
Introducing the Rewild Fund! 🌱 We’re thrilled to be launching the Rewild Fund – a groundbreaking initiative that empowers businesses and individuals to take meaningful action for orangutans and their rainforest homes. The Rewild Fund harnesses the power of community support to drive impactful, on-the-ground work in Sumatra. By joining the Rewild Fund, you become part of a movement to rewild crucial rainforest ecosystems, protect threatened species, and create a thriving future for people and nature alike. With three membership tiers, Pioneers, Rainmakers, and Canopy Collective, there’s a way for every organisation to get involved. Learn more about the Rewild Fund ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gMz_ZVFU

🦟 Did you know? Cicadas are generally harmless to humans and animals. They lack the physical structures to bite or sting, so there's no need to worry about them causing harm. Their mouthparts are more like a straw than teeth, so they can't bite, and they don't have stingers to sting. 🌳 Cicadas may be more interested in trees than people! Sometimes they might try to pierce and suck, mistaking you for a tree, but they're just confused and harmless. You can gently pick them up by their sides, and the most they'll do is vibrate and make noise. 💼 At Servpro, we're here to provide peace of mind for your home or business—yes, even during cicada season. While they may be a nuisance, rest assured that cicadas pose no threat to your property. #Cicadas #NatureFacts #PeaceOfMind #ServproSafety #RestorationExperts #FireRestoration #WaterDamageRepair #PropertyRestoration
