Yesterday, the Smart Cities Marketplace hosted a webinar on "Unlocking Private Sector Finance for Smart Cities". The event brought together a diverse range of stakeholders to explore the growing role of the private sector in financing decarbonization efforts and sustainable urban projects. Led by Tommaso Buso, Associate at BwB, and David Papp, Principal Consultant at Technopolis Group, the webinar featured insights from Delphine Queniart, a long-time banker and Executive Director at BwB. The session offered a fresh perspective on private-sector interventions and the crowding in of private capital for public projects, examining various financing instruments like green loans, sustainability-linked loans, special purpose vehicles, and city funds. Key learnings included: 🔵 The mechanics behind deploying these instruments, their advantages/disadvantages, and best practices 🔵 Criteria private investors use to evaluate a project's bankability, illustrated through sustainable bonds, PPPs, and blended finance examples 🔵 Insights from the new Climate City Capital Hub, launched in June 2024, to support cities in accessing finance for sustainable urban projects The webinar underscored the critical need for public-private collaboration to bridge the funding gap and drive greener, more liveable cities.
