Yesterday, the Smart Cities Marketplace hosted a webinar on "Unlocking Private Sector Finance for Smart Cities". The event brought together a diverse range of stakeholders to explore the growing role of the private sector in financing decarbonization efforts and sustainable urban projects. Led by Tommaso Buso, Associate at BwB, and David Papp, Principal Consultant at Technopolis Group, the webinar featured insights from Delphine Queniart, a long-time banker and Executive Director at BwB. The session offered a fresh perspective on private-sector interventions and the crowding in of private capital for public projects, examining various financing instruments like green loans, sustainability-linked loans, special purpose vehicles, and city funds. Key learnings included: 🔵 The mechanics behind deploying these instruments, their advantages/disadvantages, and best practices 🔵 Criteria private investors use to evaluate a project's bankability, illustrated through sustainable bonds, PPPs, and blended finance examples 🔵 Insights from the new Climate City Capital Hub, launched in June 2024, to support cities in accessing finance for sustainable urban projects The webinar underscored the critical need for public-private collaboration to bridge the funding gap and drive greener, more liveable cities. Let's spark some insightful discussions! 🧐 🌟 Innovation, Transformation, and Resilience in Public Sector Councils have been facing a funding gap of £4 billion over the next two years, but on the ground, transformation, innovation, and new ways of working are the buzz words floating around the sector. 💡🌟 My recent musings with Marc Stephenson from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council highlighted some key opportunities for transforming local areas, which are having MORE of an impact on directly improving outcomes for the communities who need the most help. Here are a few points that I thought would be to share in the sector conversation: 💡Don’t lose focus on getting the basics right. Great outcomes can be achieved by simple, pragmatic and basic actions. 💡You have to try new things and experiment to innovate. Focus on marginal gains, evaluate success, change models to improve. 💡Harness stronger partnerships through tangible mutual benefits. Be explicit about how those benefits will improve their performance, demand and finances. 💡Understand the needs of your local communities in detail and respond to those needs. There is no “one size fits all” solution. 💡 Enable communities and families to provide the solutions. Ensure all assets in the communities are maximised to enable this approach. 💡Ensure your commissioning and procurement services are doing what they are designed to do! Engaging with markets and understanding need is critical. 💡The power of relationships and networks are key and should be prioritised.
