In the lead up to our next online discussion event on Wednesday 30 October, I’ll be featuring each of the special guests to encourage as many people as possible to register & be a part of these important conversations. I’m so excited & grateful to have Maddison Harrington as one of our guests, to hear her perspectives from years of experience as a lawyer in the fair work & discrimination spaces. Register for free here: https://lnkd.in/gFKmxtsA Join us online on Wednesday 30 October 12-130pm (AEST) for Part 2 in the discussion series by Barcley Consulting, this time on Gender & Equity in Schools. Following the recent discussion on Gender Equity, in Part 2 we’re continuing the topic of gender but also expanding into other forms of equity/inequity in schools. Our research earlier this year; The Gold Coast Schoolyard: A Crossroads of Gender Equity, got us curious about intersectional equity and the different aspects of equity across our school system. Registration & participation is free for this interactive LIVE session in which we will provide a brief overview of our research and insights, and ask a panel of special guests and experts what can we do to help improve equity in schools & why is it important? We’ll encourage interaction & try to include an opportunity for Q&A. We’ll also give some practical tips on how you can get involved & help drive positive change. I will be proudly facilitating this conversation. I encourage anyone interested to attend including but not limited to parents, teachers, administrators, advocates, principals, lawyers, consultants, students & policymakers. Special guests include: Maddison Harrington Stephen Zissermann Tanja Kovac Terence Humphreys Bec Brideson Liam Walsh Nikki Tugano, MAPPCP James Headlam Sonya Semmens Shannon Miller Dr. William DeJean Michelle Lim 林敏诗 We'll be exploring some of the hot topics around Gender & Equity in Schools, such as: What is gender equity & what should this look like in schools? 💡Public vs Private schools 💡Single-sex vs Coeducational schools 💡Gender Equity in religious schools 💡The link to gender-based violence 💡Funding inequity in our school system 💡Human Rights & Discrimination 💡Psychological Safety & intersectional equity 💡What does the research tell us? 💡School funding & the national strategy to achieve Gender Equality Coleen MacKinnon Sapphire Parsons Ahmed Moustafa Timothy Mannix Donna Wright Chrissie Coogan Amanda Keddie Leonie Rowan Luke Ingles Maria Josefa Arias Sanuri De Silva Dr Rachael Jefferson (formerly Jefferson-Buchanan) Sally Woolford Cate Gilpin Correna Haythorpe Sharon Patrick Samantha Keir Leanne Higham Erika K Smith Melissa Kulan The 100% Project Our Watch Respect Victoria Equality Australia Wear it Purple Girls' Uniform Agenda #gender #genderequality #genderequity #equity #equality #schools #education #inequity #discrimination #intersectional #dei #humanrights #ethics #childsafety

Inequity & inequality in schools mostly disadvantages girls & all minority groups. In the fight toward equality, we need to address all inequities along the way. This includes breaking down gender stereotypes like appearance policies & access to activities. Only when kids are free to be their best uninhibited selves can they achieve their full potential in a psychologically safe space. Our recent study indicates that here in Australia private schools seem to be way behind public schools in gender equity. Read our paper here: https://lnkd.in/gnjg_fn8 Gender equality helps everyone. Schools built on a foundation of sexism are hurting kids & hurting society.

🤦♀️It is an uncomfortable truth that gender equality is far from the norm in schools today. What can we do about this as parents, governors, leaders or educators? 🧐How might we challenge and alter some of the structures and mindsets that short-change female pupils, our daughters? Look no further than our recent GDST (The Girls' Day School Trust) report, which shares expertise and practical steps to remove gender imbalances in education. 🥳 I’m incredibly proud to be part of this important work! I’ve already handed a copy to the head teacher of my children’s local co-ed primary school, and I’m eager to share it with others in my network who I’ve been discussing it with. The report highlights that “girls in school need to learn the skills necessary to navigate a world still characterised by structural inequalities and personal prejudices.” This is a call to action for all of us. I particularly appreciate Kevin Stannard‘s point in the summary: "Where does this report leave the majority of girls who attend co-ed schools?" We argue that they need and deserve advocates and allies who encourage school leaders and educators to reflect on their practices and challenge the structures that shortchange female pupils. 🦸💪I look forward to the discussions, debates, and actions from those advocates and allies, that will stem from this report. Together, we can make a significant difference! #GenderEquality #Education #wheregirlslearnwithoutlimits #framework Cathy Walker Dr Philip Purvis Chloe Combi Lucy Burrow Petford Pete Thomas Liam Isaac Tim Lovatt Cat Scutt MBE Laura Saunders MA MA (Cantab) EMCC Senior EIA

Are we unknowingly teaching gender 'untouchability' in schools? 👦👧 In many parts of India, schools have made significant strides toward gender equality by encouraging co-education and ensuring that both boys and girls have access to the same learning opportunities. This progress reflects broader societal changes and the push for more inclusive educational environments. However, a closer look reveals that even in these co-educational environments, there are invisible barriers that keep boys and girls apart, almost as if they believe the other is ‘untouchable.’ I have observed this firsthand in rural areas and have questioned the hidden curriculum operating in our schools. In a rapidly evolving world, education plays a critical role in shaping young minds. Yet, many school textbooks still reinforce outdated gender roles and stereotypes, shaping how children view themselves and others. From traditional roles to limiting career aspirations, these biases can impact students' perspectives for life. Do you think India needs to audit its school textbooks to eliminate gender biases and stereotypes? “Some topics are easy to talk about. Even in the most ideologically and demographically diverse contexts, we are able to dialogue constructively about unimportant topics — the weather, trendy restaurants, Netflix,” grantee John Tomasi notes. “But differences of opinion become more challenging when the topic matters. This is why campus controversies today tend to focus on difficult issues like racial justice, gender equality, and religion.” Facing such thorny topics, many campuses have become hotbeds of hostility. However, lack of debate can be as harmful to education as toxic conflict. The bedrock idea of Heterodox Academy(HxA) is to fix the problem from within by providing professors with tools, resources, and a supportive network. HxA launched a three-year project to provide the resources professors need to confidently articulate and practice intellectual pluralism — in their classrooms and throughout their campuses.
