THIS WEEK'S BTS EVENING LECTURE 📅 Thursday 12th December 🗺️ Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), 1 Great George Street, London, SW1P 3AA The last evening lecture of 2024 is being delivered by some of the team working on the HS2 Main Works Lots S1 & S2: Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture The lectures will focus on Cross Passage Construction including the use of Artificial Ground Freezing and be delivered by: 🗣️ Ala Hammad BEng MSc MIEI – Tunnel Agent, STRABAG UK 🗣️ Philip Allvey – Tunnel Engineering Manager, STRABAG UK 🗣️ David Terry – Lead Tunnel Engineering Manager, SCS JV This lecture will discuss an integrated method for safely constructing cross passages in challenging geological conditions between two Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-driven running tunnels on the HS2 Project. Of the 20 cross passages to be constructed, 14 are utilising Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) and 3 are employing dewatering and depressurisation methods. Traditionally, AGF has been utilised primarily for rescue operations. However, its application within the UK has been limited due to cost and time constraints. The implementation of AGF on this project is the most extensive AGF application undertaken on a single project within the UK. Lessons learned from this approach will also be discussed, providing insights for future projects. Post-lecture food is sponsored by CK-Tech whilst the drinks are sponsored by Normet Group Follow the British Tunnelling Society for the latest insight on tunnel-related matters To learn about the benefits of joining the British Tunnelling Society click here: https://bit.ly/3r0MPoU #BritishTunnellingSociety #civilengineering #undergroundconstruction #tunnelling

In the construction industry, effective information management is not just a necessity; it’s a key driver of project success. From initial design to construction and long-term maintenance, projects generate vast amounts of data that must be managed efficiently. When information is well-structured, accurate, and easily accessible, it improves communication, enhances collaboration, and supports informed decision-making. This leads to smoother processes, reduced risks, regulatory compliance, and ultimately, better project outcomes for all stakeholders. However, several barriers can hinder effective information management, including siloed data, inconsistent data standards, and the use of outdated technologies. These challenges can result in costly delays, errors, and miscommunication. We covered this and so much more with the excellent panel of experts yesterday. Martin

🌟That Friday Feeling🌟 Effective information management is critical.... One of the key themes I've consistently encountered is the critical role of effective information management. From early design phases to long-term maintenance, managing data efficiently is not just a necessity—it's a #driver of #projectsuccess. When communication flows seamlessly and data is accessible, it leads to smoother processes, fewer errors, and better project outcomes for everyone involved. It’s encouraging to see that the challenges I’ve faced in the past—siloed data, inconsistent standards, and outdated technologies—are now being openly discussed in forums like the expert panels yesterday, hosted by Amodal Limited. The industry is moving towards more collaborative and integrated approaches, which is exciting to witness! Looking forward to continuing the conversation and showcasing how Asite is contributing to this important transformation. #Construction #InformationManagement #Collaboration #DataDriven #ProjectSuccess

In today's rapidly evolving world, the collaboration between academia and industry is more crucial than ever. Recently, we had the privilege of hosting Richard Brooks from Waterman Group on the topic of sustainable bridge here at Anglia Ruskin University. Why does this matter? 1. Students gained invaluable insights from experts actively shaping our infrastructure's future. Bridging theoretical knowledge with practical applications sparks innovation and fresh perspectives. 2. As the global community increasingly prioritizes environmental impacts, learning from industry leaders in sustainable bridge structure projects emphasizes the importance of green engineering principles in creating resilient infrastructure. 3. Encouraging dialogue between students and professionals fosters networking opportunities, paving the way for future collaborations and career guidance. 4. Through expert interaction, students experience firsthand how diverse disciplines contribute to groundbreaking projects. A big thank you to Waterman Group for sharing their expertise and passion with us. Thanks for Dr Shadi Ostovari PhD CEng MICE and Dr Marina Boz for making this happen. Let's continue building bridges—not only of the physical ones but of knowledge and collaboration too! 🛠️🤝 #SustainableEngineering #BridgeConstruction #IndustryAndAcademia #Networking #Innovation #FutureLeaders #livebrief
Last week I had the pleasure to attend Richard Brooks session as part of the Live Brief on Sustainable Conceptual Design for Civil Engineering led by Dr Shadi Ostovari PhD CEng MICE. Richard is an award-winning civil engineer and the National Lead for Civil Structures at Waterman Group. His Live Brief session was a masterclass on sustainable design of bridges based on the PAS 2080, with excellent insights from one of his bridge case studies that our second year students in Civil Engineering will be able to apply when working on their green bridge brief. Inspiring the potential next generation of civil engineers by engaging with students from years 10 to 12 was a truly wonderful opportunity. The chance to explain the role of a civil engineer, about the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and share insights from personal project experiences proved invaluable. Not surprisingly, a rollercoaster project gained the most interactive responses from the students. It's remarkable how a seemingly simple question, "How does a chair support you, and how does the building support the chair?" can spark young minds' curiosity and foster engaging discussions. Realism is the fact that we take engineering for granted, from the chair that we sit in, to the buildings we occupy and how we get there. I am confident that civil engineering has a bright and promising future with engaging and innovative minds. #ICESingapore #ICEsoutheastasia #stemlearning #civilengineering
Gavin, Director of GTL International, graced AIS School with his expertise, shedding light on the path to becoming a civil engineer. His presentation ignited a fire within the students of AIS School to pursue excellence in engineering. #EngineeringInspiration #CivilEngineering #GTLInternationalLeadership
