Experiential spaces. What makes a space experiential? Is it the act of bringing strangers together, dancing under a moonlight? Or the act of play connecting us to a childlike wonder. Are being immersed in an environment that is living art and evolves with every movement of visual masterpiece of light. Is it that Instagrammable moment creating an interaction to our world online? Or knowing that something tastes sweet just by looking at it. Where the scent that transports you to a memory of a space every time you step through the doors. A signature that many hotels have perfected. Experiential spaces prioritize human interaction with the built environment, connecting us to a narrative that is being told. It allows us to remember that experience of buying a lip gloss, but specifically the environment that comes with it that you can't forget. Or feeling like you're wearing a piece of art when buying a simple pair of glasses, when utility turns into unique luxury. That's the story we're trying to tell. Sometimes it's the nostalgia and deja vu, a story about a story we already know. Or an experience that can create an unforgettable trip even to the bath. Finnish architect Johanni Palazzo once said architecture is the art of reconciliation between ourselves and the world, and this mediation takes place through the senses. How we engage these senses, big or small, all at once or one by one, allows us to connect to a space through intimate personal moments, sometimes even with the juxtaposition of being in a very public space. It's immersive narratives through the five senses that leave an emotional connection to a space. Those lasting memories that keep inviting us back? It's the Disney effect. As designers, we have the ability to drive this narrative to help inform decisions occupants make. Or using an experience of a journey to educate a narrative about how we can all design better. Taking a negative and creating a positive and experience of life. Creating a motion through space, pushing the boundaries that will bring stories to life from inside. To outside. Thank you.
