How legal is your Board of Trustees? The National Council for Voluntary Organisations(NCVO) have produced an excellent 35-point checklist for measuring a huge range of legal aspects that need to be covered by most voluntary and not for profit organisations. But it’s not just a tick box check. The NCVO checklist goes beyond just listing these legal aspects. It’s plugged into action points! With this in mind, the document carries a second column with some suggestions on how the aspect could be monitored by any board of trustees. And a final column suggests available resources to help you with excellent links to these sources. NCVO stress that the checklist is designed to be adjusted to suit your organisation and is not an exhaustive list of legal obligations or good governance expectations. They point out that legal duties may well alter as new laws are passed therefore the organisation may need to add to or adjust the list in the future. And this could well be true after the July 4th UK General Election! There are transferable learning points for check listing in other types of organisations, again with the caveat that adjustments will need to be considered. The link is below. Part of my responsibility in enhancing the corporate sponsorship program of an association involved compiling a comprehensive list of competitors. My intent was to create one “Competitive Analysis” PowerPoint slide with information I gleaned from my research. The list grew to two slides; the list continued to expand so I decreased the font size. The final compilation included a 75 entries, a testament to the breadth and diversity of competitors vying for the attention of both the association's members and potential sponsors. We addressed ways to mitigate the impact of competition on associations during the recent webinar “How the Competitive Landscape has Changed for Associations and What to Do About It”. The new #Labour Government: implications for the #charity and #voluntary sector After 14 years of a Conservative government what might Labour’s landslide win in the General Election on 4 July mean for the charity and voluntary sector? This briefing note by our Senior Consultant and Specialist Charity Lawyer, Sarah Chiappini, provides a brief initial “headline” summary. 🤝 If you are a charity or other voluntary sector body there are some important things to look out for including, the NCVO ACEVO Voluntary Sector Manifesto sets out seven 'asks' of the new Government to tackle issues affecting the sector, resetting the sector's relationship with government to enable the sector to have its voice heard and the impact that the new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) alongside other Cabinet appointments might have on the sector. If you require any advice on these areas or other areas of charity law, please get in touch. 👍 #Labourgovernment #charitysector #charitylaw #voluntarysector
