The Dosta Tec team was in Pontevedra, Galicia, last week.   Every now and then, it’s important to get out in the field and review existing solutions, moving away from projects and building energy models – just for a moment.   Winter gardens are widespread in the region, due to the intensity of rain, especially in winter. In Pontevedra, there isn’t a single block without at least one.   A few examples:   1) The Old: wooden-framed and probably over 100 years old, located on “Praza da Leña”. 2) The New: a tight, PVC-framed version on a newer building, most likely with better thermal resistance. 3) The Adapted: a retrofitted version. An interesting view of 2 different installations (top 2 floors), alongside non-retrofitted balconies. At some point in the building’s life, the individual owners decided it was time to build their winter garden.   Apart from shielding the space from the rain and cold, winter gardens create a controllable “thermal buffer” which helps keep the heat inside the apartment.   One solution, 3 different approaches.   #vernacular #passivearchitecture #buildingefficiency #nzeb
