Prepare strategically and sustainably for Europe's energy and digital transition! #EUElections2024 With the growing use of digital technologies in almost all organisations, the sector's need for rare metals is exponential, even though they are already in great demand in other industries (automotive, electronics, manufacturing, etc.). Rare metal supply problems highlight geopolitical issues. Indeed, 60% of the world's known rare earth reserves are in China, and the European Union is supplied with 98% of its rare earths by this country. Finally, our companies face a major challenge: certain raw materials are either threatened with extinction in the next 100 years, or are already very limited and present a risk in terms of supply, such as magnesium or lithium. This is why Cigref, Beltug, VOICE - Bundesverband der IT-Anwender e.V. and CIO Platform Nederland propose in their Manifesto to set up an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) for critical raw materials, in order to prepare strategically and sustainably for Europe's energy and digital transitions. Let's ensure that European companies are ready for the future and able to face global competition, in particular by ensuring the EU's ecological transition, by strengthening local production of batteries, solar panels, permanent magnets and other clean technologies. This is why, in our Manifesto, we are proposing that the European Parliament create new regulations aimed at forcing manufacturers to publish and reduce their ecological footprint. Giving priority to reducing the environmental impact of digital technologies right from the manufacturing stage is a crucial first step towards achieving a sustainable digital future. This proposal is in line with legislative efforts at European Union level. However, these measures are still insufficient to fully meet the environmental challenges we face. It's time to go further by imposing stricter standards and requiring manufacturers to actively reduce their carbon footprint, minimise electronic waste and adopt more sustainable production practices, all in full transparency. The Manifesto co-authored by Cigref, Beltug, CIO Platform and Voice highlights the need to put an end to programmed obsolescence and increase the lifespan of equipment. This proposal is perfectly aligned with our previous work, in particular with the Strategic Orientation Report (SOR) 2023 edition, which highlights the disruptions by 2030 and stresses the importance of responsible management of digital waste. Similarly, the 2022 edition already highlighted the challenges and consequences of programmed obsolescence. It also ties in with the REEN law, which aims to encourage a circular economy by promoting the repair and recycling of electronic products. Europe's political decision-makers must continue these efforts and take concrete measures to improve efficiency and promote the sustainable use of equipment. For example, the Quantum Technologies Flagship, launched in 2018, is a large-scale, long-term research initiative with an EU-funded budget of €1 billion, bringing together research institutions developing European scientific leadership and excellence in this field. Targeted research and innovation efforts are essential to strengthen the EU's position in relation to its global competitors. By promoting European competition, innovation and economic growth will be stimulated. This approach also aims to reduce our dependence on certain suppliers and ensure the long-term prosperity of our continent. In their Manifesto, Cigref, Beltug, CIO Platform Nederland and Voice propose the creation of an eco-design standard for software, incorporating sustainability criteria throughout its development. In the European Union, the REEN law aims to reduce the environmental footprint of digital services by introducing a general eco-design standard. Article 25 provides for the creation of sustainable design criteria for software, demonstrating the political will to promote a more environmentally-friendly approach to the digital sector. In addition, many associations share our vision and are proposing similar measures to integrate sustainability into software design. "The #RegulatoryBurden on #tech is undeniably too high," argues CCIA Europe's Daniel Friedlaender. 📖 "The EU has adopted over 50 laws in the past years applying to the #digital and tech sectors. But the impact is being felt across Europe's entire economy – whether it's agriculture, energy, construction, or infrastructure. Because #technology is an intrinsically partnership-driven space." Attending the Global Solutions Summit. Most of proposed solutions called for more - more funding, more engagement, more taxes for the rich (which I loved). However, it felt like the experts are skirting around this very important question “How much are wealthy nations ready to give up?” - less consumption, less exploitation #ygc2024 #gss2024 Global Solutions Initiative

Europe is currently facing a shortage of digital experts capable of developing cutting-edge technologies for the benefit of all citizens. To bridge this gap, programmes and initiatives are needed to encourage the training and #development of #digitaltalent. This is why CIO Platform Nederland, Beltug, Cigref, and VOICE - Bundesverband der IT-Anwender e.V. propose in their Manifesto to resume or continue European work on the formalisation of digital talent. By investing in digital talent, we are shaping a prosperous future for Europe, where innovation and economic growth go hand in hand with inclusion and #well-being for all citizens. This call is part of the Manifesto "A perspective on the digital world of tomorrow", the European IT user associations (CIO Platform Nederland, Beltug, Cigref, and VOICE) are presenting for the upcoming EU Elections. It contains the essential requirements European politicians must take into account to make and keep the EU digitally competitive in a global context. On the eve of the European elections in June, it is crucial to place the issue of inclusion and the development of digital skills at the heart of our priorities. That is why Beltug, Cigref, CIO Platform Nederland and VOICE - Bundesverband der IT-Anwender e.V. propose in its Manifesto an ambitious three-pronged approach to investing in digital skills: 👐 Providing all citizens with digital skills for their daily lives 🏢 Equipping professionals with the digital skills they need in the workplace 💡 Providing experts with the skills they need to develop new technologies This proposal is in line with European work such as the Compass to 2030, which focuses on four main points, including a significant increase in digital skills. It is also in line with the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL), a new funding programme focused on bringing digital technologies to businesses, citizens and public administrations.
