🧠 Ben’s Friday Psych Bite: Familiarity Bias Ever feel like you instinctively know how to use a new app without a tutorial? You’re not alone, Familiarity Bias is at play! People naturally gravitate toward experiences that feel familiar. When you switch between your five different streaming apps, notice how the layout and controls feel nearly identical? That’s no coincidence, Familiarity Bias ensures we prefer things that don’t require much mental effort to figure out. Consider this: Could you imagine a different icon for “Play”? Would progress bars work if they didn’t use a familiar, linear line? And would “Episodic Videos” be as easy to find as “TV Shows”? Probably not—because these patterns are ingrained in our minds through years of use. So how can you use this when designing your next product feature? 👉 Start by thinking about the task at hand. How have users completed this before? 👀 Look beyond apps, how is this task done in everyday life? ▶️ Are there universal symbols or processes tied to this task? Remember, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes, sticking to what people already know is the key to success. #ux #psychology #product #design #designthinking Illustration by Jake Fleming

🚀 In 2010, YouTube had 800M active users streaming over 2B videos daily, but internally, they were flying blind about user behavior. This tweet explains their journey to unravel the mystery behind the user behavior: https://lnkd.in/eP8H9m-Z A game-changer was when Kerry Rodden, Google’s first Quantitative UX Researcher, joined YouTube and asked the crucial question: "How are people actually using YouTube?" Kerry’s insights showed that less than half of sessions started on the homepage, prompting them to pivot towards personalized recommendations. This shift was pivotal in making YouTube a leading mobile video app. This story is a testament to the power of understanding users. Data-driven insights not only illuminate user behavior but can also transform products and strategies. 🔍📊 Remember, understanding your users qualitatively and quantitatively can reveal gaps, unexpected behaviors, and opportunities for innovation. #UserExperience #DataDriven #ProductInnovation #YouTubeTransformation #UXResearch

Mental Model: Peak-End Rule Did you know? Users judge an experience based on two things: 1️⃣ The peak (most intense moment) 2️⃣ The end (how it concludes) This is the Peak-End Rule. Make the most critical moments in your app amazing, and ensure the last interaction leaves a positive impression. ✨ Question: What was your last great digital experience, and why? #UXPsychology #MentalModels #PeakEndRule

#law of UX-22 Peak-End Rule Coined by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman and his collaborator Barbara Fredrickson, this rule posits that people recall an experience based on how they felt at its most intense point (the peak) and at its end, rather than the average of every moment. Designing for the peak-end rule is another way of not focusing on what is less important; about focusing on what brings the most value to the users' experience. Establish positive peaks and ends. Counteract negative experiences by delivering a clear positive peak- and end-experiences. The peak–end rule is a psychological heuristic in which people judge an experience largely based on how they felt at its peak (i.e., its most intense point) and at its end, rather than based on the total sum or average of every moment of the experience. #ui #uidesign #uiux #uiuxdesign #uitrends #uichallenge #uiuxtips #uiuxjobs #uideveloper #uxresearch #uxcasestudy #uxcareer #uxtips #uxcommunity #appdevelopment #appdesign #app #applepodcasts #uxdesign

Yesterday, I stumbled across an old project of mine. It was a basic app, designed early in my career. I remembered the excitement, the endless iterations, and the user tests that sometimes left me frustrated. Then vs. Now: - Then: I focused purely on aesthetics. - Now: It’s all about user needs. I revisited the feedback from those initial users—complaints I took to heart, and praises that fueled my late nights. And I realized, each critique made my work stronger, more user-centric. Lesson Learned: - Every piece of feedback is a goldmine. - Our real job? To bridge tech and human interaction. So, keep diving deep into those user needs. Remember, we’re not just creating interfaces; we're crafting experiences that touch lives and make real differences. Keep pushing. Keep evolving. Because what we do really matters. What's the one piece of feedback that transformed your design approach?Share your story! #UIUX #UserExperience #DesignThinking #UXJourney

Project Update🔔 Check out the video where I take you through a glimpse of Yash's user journey on our app! Initially, I was overwhelmed by the complexity of building a web3 platform and the sheer number of potential features. I've been jumping back and forth to gather more insights. However, with time constraints in mind, I strategically narrowed the focus to solve meaningful connections within the platform. As I write this post, I want to narrow down the community feature even more and build a good experience for both creators and collectors. Thanks to Anudeep Ayyagari (UX Anudeep) for guiding. What are your thoughts on broadcast channels by creators? Do let me know in the comments.

Am I missing something ... the only way to see your watch history on Netflix is to log in to the website?!? Why can't I see my watch history in the app or on my TV? Seeing my watch history on the app or TV seems like a pretty common use case if you ask me 🤷♀️ . #ux #uxdesign #productdesign

𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱! How to design products users are stuck on! I have friends who are into match predictions. Every time they come home, they're either frustrated about their team's performance or throwing insults at their clubs for not winning or losing. In their words: Just this one game! 🤌🏻 (Man U, you do this one) They will even go on and try to explain to me how they were this close to hitting jackpot. (I'm like why you telling me?)🤷♂️ But give them couple of minutes, they're back at it again. I used to wonder why they kept at it regardless of how much they're winning or losing. Well, now I know. The system is designed to give players a reward often enough to keep them interested, but variable enough to hook them. The apps on our phones works the same way. When we go on tiktok, how many interesting videos will you find? It's like the next interesting video is always 2 to 3 videos away. So that hunt to find videos worth liking or sharing is addictive and it makes users stay on it long and keep coming back. This is power of variable reward. This is one among the four-step model talked about in this book by Nir Iyal called Hooked. Check it out! #uxpsychology #ux #ui #hooked #userexperience

Week 17 of UX Insights: MyMind App 🧠 Ever lose track of your brilliant ideas? MyMind makes it easy to capture and organize them with just a few taps. It has truly helped me keep everything in one place, so I no longer need to click hundreds of screenshots. The app is a great combination of usability and functionality—very well built. mymind, Inc. I think (conspiracy theory time!!) Max employs some dark UX patterns - it’s not clear when new episodes of your favorite shows are available. This forces you, the user, to spend more time on the app to figure it out. I’d be willing to bet they are optimizing for time spent on app even outside of time spent watching content. The risk of optimizing for the wrong metric (or just generally over-focusing on metrics) is that product can feel successful short-term even when long term the users might not be improving their opinion of the product. HOWEVER, platform products are driven so strongly by content - it almost doesn't matter what the front page of Max is or does, nor does it matter that they employ dark UX patterns (if they do) - what matters is that the last episode of House of Dragon WAS SO GOOD and I literally can't wait for the next one. Content is STILL king. #platformproduct #productmanagement

Daily UI challenge day 25❤️ Today was Tv App day 📺, a while ago I had a class on Media History where we reviewed how important and impactful the updating of channel, music and movie transmission has been over time, although I was not there at the time of transition I loved knowing that we have more and more entertainment facilities, however, we must know how to use them. 🍃 #ui #ux #graphicdesignui #uidesign #uiuxsupply #applicationdesign #appdesigninspiration #websitedesign #webdesigninspiration #dailyui #uiinspiration
