Employee Assistance Programme vs. Counselling Service: Which is Best for Your Team? When it comes to supporting employee wellbeing, businesses often debate whether to invest in an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) or offer access to standalone counselling services. Here's a quick breakdown to help you decide: EAP: ✅ Comprehensive support, not just counselling - can include financial advice, legal help. Often very low cost ❌ Often underutilized if employees aren't fully aware of what’s on offer, or have a need for all of that support. Counselling Service: ✅ Mental health support tailored to individual needs. Employees know exactly what they’re getting—personalised, professional therapy. ❌ Wont cover other life challenges like financial or legal advice. Usually the more expensive option Which is best? If you’re looking for a broader service, an EAP can be great value. But, if your team would benefit from more targeted mental health support, a counselling service might be the way to go. We may also recommend counselling services over EAPs for very small businesses where they are unlikely to get much uptake of an EAP but they have some specific health needs in mind.
