Over the last two decades, our teams have been on the forefront of designing and implementing rights protection programs for leading international and national sports federations and their events. Live content, highlight clips, trade marks, ambush marketing, proprietary data, merchandise, tickets - name it and we have covered it. These experiences have brought us many learnings and insights. LawInSport has kindly featured these in a series of three articles - because one article wasn't enough for them all! Roshan Gopalakrishna | Nihal Zachariah #TakingRightsSeriously

In an article by the Sports Business Journal, they talk about the lack of structure in the college football world from the recent chaos of conference realignment to media rights. I disagree with their idea of completely reshaping the conference landscape and replacing staple conferences like the BIG10 and SEC with a new 72-team format that is divided into twelve conferences because it’s too drastic of a shift from the current system. I agree with their idea that media rights need to be sorted out because the system itself is causing leakages of cash flow everywhere. This is because each conference makes its own media deal for the season, but a separate entity makes the media deals for the postseason and playoff. #CFB #Realignment #Change #Media

Reports are swarming in about a proposed college football “Super League”, which would take the seventy most important football programs in the country, split them into seven divisions, and create a collectively bargained league. There is also wiggle-room in the proposal for smaller schools to be promoted from the second tier into the first, similar to European soccer leagues’ relegation system. The proposal is being drafted by a group that calls themselves “College Sports Tomorrow”, which is comprised of various power-brokers and stakeholders from across the country – including university presidents and sports executives. To be clear, this proposal is still in its early stages. One big problem with actualizing the plan could be the massive media rights contracts that conferences have already signed with TV providers.
