ENGAGING WOMEN IN #STEM IS EVERYONE'S JOB We need a better gender balance in the tech world for so many reasons, not least of which is that typically women offer a different perspective to men and a more informed and balanced perspective that can only be a good thing. But, the number of women remains stubbornly low and more needs to be done. Sandy Plunkett explains where we are today. #MrSaaSSays - Statistically, women are more successful entrepreneurs https://lnkd.in/dEHz6iMp

“If women and people of color can’t see themselves in spaces of contributing to the body of knowledge that impacts their communities, we are closing an avenue to thriving.” Empowering Diverse Voices in Science: Dr. Carlota Ocampo, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs; Associate Professor of Psychology at Trinity Washington University, believes that when Women in STEM are empowered, it benefits society at large. It also benefits the women, who are allowed to self-actualize, find fulfillment, and thrive in their field. Why this work matters: We're committed to transforming STEM ecosystems and creating a future in which all who wish can reach their full potential in STEM. Through the Clare Boothe Luce Program for Women in STEM and STEM Convergence, we aspire to close the gender gap in the field, broaden the participation of women from diverse backgrounds, and advance women-led STEM innovation for positive social change. Join key stakeholders, at 10am, May 28th at CoLab North West, for "Females in STEM Northwest: Building the Talent Pipeline" as we explore the pivotal role of women in STEM, the challenges they face and the collective efforts needed to achieve gender equality for a future-proof regional economy. Expertise in STEM fields can greatly accelerate innovation and technological development across regional economies, which in turn are seen as drivers of social and economic growth. However, across Ireland, women represent fewer than 25% of people working in STEM sectors and that shortfall is set only to increase as future demand for STEM skills increases. Hosted by ATU, under the Interreg Europe WeSTEMEU project, "Females in STEM Northwest: Building the Talent Pipeline" will see role models, educators, pioneers and innovators explore the challenges and opportunities in broadening female STEM participation across the Northwest region. A big shout out to Women's Agenda for highlighting the government's budget announcement of a $38.2m (over 8 years) investment in creating a diverse and thriving #STEM workforce. But also for raising the visibility of the grassroots organisations - including the social enterprise I founded Franklin Women - who turn up each day motivated by achieving this exact goal despite limited resources, small teams and insecure funding. Over the last 9 years Franklin Women has created a community of more than 15000 women and their allies, as well as a strong alliance of workplaces who employ them, who share our vision for a health and medical research sector where women thrive. The impact? ❤️ retention of women in our sector because of a renewed sense of belonging, stronger networks and future proofing skills development 📈 more woman in leadership roles thanks to our evaluated mentoring program 💸 greater workplace participation with $45K funds awarded to primary carers 💻 increase visibility of women's contributions via our newsletter, socials and wikipedia #Editathons 👨🏫 shifts in workplace cultures driven by 500+ sector leaders of all genders with inclusive leadership knowledge and skills 🏢 employers stepping up to listen, learn and invest in change around diversity and inclusion in their workplaces through our Partner Organisation Alliance. And so so much more that cannot be measured or quantified. As I said in this article: 'There is not going to be one initiative, organisation, or piece of policy that is going to lead to a more diverse and inclusive STEM sector we are completely reimagining how science has been done and so it requires investment at all levels and across a breadth of activities' But it is so important that grassroots organisations are not overlooked as they serve an effective mechanism to bring people together to drive meaingful change that we are all hoping for 🚀 Feel very proud that Franklin Women gets to work along side so many other passionate and impactful #STEMM organisations > STEM Sisters iSTEM Co. WILD for STEM Women in STEMM Australia AWSN - Australian Women in Security Network and many others 🙏 #WomenInSTEMM Department of Industry, Science and Resources
In last year’s federal budget, the Albanese government committed $38.2 million over eight years to support a “thriving, skilled and diverse” STEM workforce. With Australia's Women in STEM Ambassador Initiative is officially coming to an end today, Olivia Cleal asked six grassroots organisations working in the space if this funding was enough. Here’s what they had to say. WILD for STEM STEM Sisters iSTEM Co. Franklin Women AWSN - Australian Women in Security Network WIC Women in ICT #womeninstem

Many thanks to the Women's Agenda for shedding light on such a critical and fundamental issue. How can grassroots organizations like STEM Sisters fill the gaps left by larger, more general initiatives in advancing diversity in STEM? STEM Sisters empower women of colour in STEM fields, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. This shift presents an opportunity for organizations like STEM Sisters to play a pivotal role in fostering inclusion and equity within the STEM sector. Founded by Dr Ruwangi Fernando, STEM Sisters targets the unique challenges women of colour face in STEM through tailored programs such as the Mentoring Program, Ambassador Program, BE You Program, Awareness of Opportunities Group, Events such as Soapbox Science and Dress to Express, and lMAGNIFY magazine. These initiatives are critical in addressing the "leaky pipeline," a phenomenon where women continuously drop out of STEM careers due to following barriers. Lack of Role Models, Mentors and Peer Networks Lack of opportunity to engage with STEM Professional Networks Bias in Employment and Advancement opportunities Stereotype Threat Impacting Personal Confidence STEM Sisters’ efforts in providing role models and creating supportive networks help women navigate these challenges, ensuring they enter and thrive in their STEM careers. In Early 2023, STEM Sisters was supported through initiatives like the WISE funding grant, which has enabled STEM Sisters to expand its impact across multiple states. This demonstrates the significant potential of targeted support and the need for continued investment in grassroots programs. STEM Sisters’s work highlights the necessity for diverse strategies that cater specifically to the needs of women facing intersectional challenges in STEM. These strategies are essential for dismantling the systemic barriers that prevent these women from advancing in their fields. As the conversation about funding priorities continues, it is clear that supporting organizations like STEM Sisters addresses immediate gaps and builds a more inclusive and dynamic STEM community for the future. How can you help? If STEM Sisters has impacted your journey in STEM, please like, share, and tell others about our work. Most importantly, we call on the government, particularly Ed Husic MP and Katy Gallagher, to support our initiatives and those of other grassroots organizations like iSTEM Co., WILD for STEM, Franklin Women, AWSN - Australian Women in Security Network, WIC Women in ICT, and etc. Together, we can make a significant impact on the future of STEM diversity and inclusion.
