📢 News: Australia’s Clinical Trials Sector More Valuable Than Ever Before Figures from a new MTPConnect report reveal that the clinical trials sector generated $1.6 billion for the Australian economy in 2022. The outcome, detailed in MTPConnect’s upcoming clinical trials sector snapshot report, represents growth of more than 4 per cent on 2019 and has been achieved in spite of the 2020 pandemic downturn. MTPConnect CEO, Stuart Dignam, says it’s an outcome worth recognising as we celebrate World Clinical Trials Day this week. Australia’s clinical trials capabilities and expertise will be a key focus for the Australian delegation heading to the BIO International Convention in San Diego early next month. This research suggests that whilst Europe is a strong performer in commercial multi-country clinical trials, it is losing global share. The European clinical trial ecosystem is critical to patients, healthcare systems and society: •by For patients, clinical trials offer early access to innovative medicines, and for rare disease patients, trials can be the only treatment option • For health systems, clinical trials bring revenue, cost-savings, clinical skills, and staff satisfaction • For society, clinical trials bring economic investment and GDP benefits, valued at multi-billion Euros Recent European level and member state policy initiatives have attempted to increase the capabilities and attractiveness of t he clinical trial ecosystem. For example, EU Clinical Trials Regulation (CTR) aimed to harmonize clinical trial capabilities across Europe, and make multi-country applications more streamlined, with the goal of boosting Europe’s competitiveness in attracting clinical trials. This goal has not yet been met. At best, Europe has held, but not improved its position. This research suggests that whilst Europe is a strong performer in commercial multi-country clinical trials, it is losing global share. It is urgent to act to reverse this trend.

Check out this insightful blog by the ACRP - Association of Clinical Research Professionals, emphasizing the need to redefine and enhance the clinical trial site selection process. It's surprising to see that information provided by sites during feasibility assessments often isn't captured or stored in databases for future reference by sponsors. This becomes particularly challenging when site staff need to repeatedly fill out paper-based feasibility questionnaires for the same sponsor. Having said that, each study comes with its own unique requirements. One approach to alleviating the site burden could be to capture site feasibility data and organize responses based on the trial's type, phase, and therapeutic area. **Honoring Patient Voices: Transforming ALS Clinical Trials Together** This week at the MND International Scientific Session in Montreal, I had the honor of presenting our poster, Opportunities to Reduce Patient Burden in Clinical Trials for People Living with ALS. This work would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication and collaboration of patients, caregivers, and advocates who have shared their insights to help us shape more thoughtful and inclusive clinical trial designs. The session reinforced a message we’ve long known to be true: early patient engagement is not just valuable—it is essential. By listening to the voices of those living with ALS, we can design clinical trials that better reflect their realities, reduce burdens, and ultimately accelerate progress. It was deeply gratifying to hear from so many attendees at the conference who recognized the importance of this approach and noted that sharing and publishing these insights helps set a new precedent in ALS drug development. I want to acknowledge and thank the incredible organizations that have supported and amplified this work, including The ALS Association , ALS Canada, The International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations, NEALS, and End the Legacy. Your collaboration and commitment to representing the community are driving meaningful change. To the patients, caregivers, and advocates: your courage and determination continue to inspire us. For patients and healthcare professionals it means more options, durable clinical benefit, reduced exposure to non-effective drugs and the potential to leverage current scientific and technological advances. For the pharmaceutical industry, we’re talking about the potential to tackle core challenges in discovering and developing more effective medicines, to reduce rates of attrition in drug development, and to reduce the associated escalating costs which are central to a more sustainable future and delivery for healthcare needs. Meanwhile, for healthcare systems and payers, the drivers are improved efficiency through the provision of efficacious and cost-effective care through the avoidance of ineffective and redundant interventions. These are again key to a more sustainable and deliverable future system. The question of whether innovation is really giving us value for money often arises. The debate has focussed to a large extent on the cost of “doing something”. Yet surely we also need to remember to ask ‘what about the cost of not doing something? Diagnostic and therapeutic innovation must be implemented in a structured cost-effective approach that emphasises measurable improvements in outcome for the patient in the personalised healthcare era.   Resources are scarce for all of us working in healthcare, which is exacerbated by an ageing population and the consequent increase in chronic diseases and co-morbidities.
