We were truly honored to receive an invitation to the Robotic Walking event at the Telus Spark Science Centre in Calgary, Alberta, this past weekend. The event, meticulously organized by the PONI lab in collaboration with @cpkidsandfamilies, welcomed families from across the city, particularly those with children facing mobility challenges. It truly filled our hearts witnessing our device in action amidst the joyful atmosphere. #ARVO2024 Update 19: Do past axial elongation and myopia progression predict the future? Results from the BLINK Study. Donald Mutti of Ohio State University, USA, and co-authors. This study evaluated whether 2 years of previous myopia progression and axial elongation could be used to predict future progression. Myopic children (n=284) aged 7-11 years were randomly assigned either Biofinity soft contact lenses for 3 years in either single vision or centre-distance multifocal with +1.50D or +2.50D add. In terms of axial elongation (mm), fast progressors in the first 2 years continued to show faster elongation in the third year. However, previous rapid refractive (D) myopia progression was unrelated to progression in the third year. This suggests that use of historical myopia progression based on refraction alone may not be useful to identify fast progressors. Myopia is the futures diabetics. What I actually mean by the phrase "Myopia is the future's diabetes" is the comparison between the growing prevalence of myopia (nearsightedness) and the global increase in diabetes. It suggests that myopia, like diabetes, is becoming a widespread public health issue, particularly among younger generations. Both conditions are influenced by lifestyle changes—myopia is often linked to increased screen time, prolonged near work, and less time spent outdoors, while diabetes is commonly associated with poor diet and lack of physical activity. The comparison may imply that, just as diabetes is now a major health concern, myopia could similarly become a dominant issue that requires public health attention and intervention in the future.

Our lab alumni, Rohan Khatavkar and Dr. ASHUTOSH TIWARI have recently published their work entitled " A Novel Kinematic Gait Parameter-Based Vibrotactile Cue for Freezing of Gait Mitigation among Parkinson's Patients: A Pilot Study" in IEEE Transactions on Haptics. In this work, they have developed and utilized a novel cueing kinematic gait parameter-based vibrotactile scheme for the mitigation of freezing of gait (FoG) for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in place of the standard audio-visual cues and closed-loop vibrotactile cues based on temporal gait events, making it ideal for real-world use. This novel scheme was implemented using indigenous instrumented shoes to drive vibrotactile cueing. They were successful in mitigating FoGs.
