🧠 In the last few months, #brainstorm sessions were organised by each Biotech4Food partner to gain further insights into the main #barriers faced by actors in the agri-food #biotechnology 🔬 industry, and the potential solutions to address industrial #challenges and barriers – including building pilot plants within the territories. 🤝 Major industrial actors Danone and Michelin recently announced, in partnership with the American company DMC Biotechnologies, Inc., and Crédit Agricole Centre France, the creation of the Biotech Open Platform, located in one of the Biotech4Food project regions. 👉 With an initial #investment of 16 million euros, this platform aiming to develop advanced precision #fermentation processes will be located in Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. 🧠🌱 Regional brainstorm: biotechnology in the French South-East agri-food industry A few days ago, Innov'Alliance - Le pôle de compétitivité de la Naturalité Agroalimentaire Nutraceutique Cosmétique Arômes Parfums organised a roundtable session to discuss the challenges, barriers, and potential solutions in the application of biotechnology in the agri-food industry of the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Région Sud - Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 🚧 Participants found that significant #barriers in their use were current legislation, consumer perception, and the lack of adequate infrastructure at regional level. 🤔 How do we address these barriers? Concrete ideas emerging from the discussion included: - To maximize collaboration and work in #collective effort; - To map the regional #ecosystem of agri-food #biotechnology actors; - To build a regional #strategy around agri-food biotechnology; - To set up pilot plants in our territories, reflecting on the model of #public-#private partnerships. 📢 Efforts are underway by Innov'Alliance - Le pôle de compétitivité de la Naturalité Agroalimentaire Nutraceutique Cosmétique Arômes Parfums to continue building on these ideas, both with the actors of the agri-food industry, as well as with the relevant regional political actors. 🤔What is Biotech4Food Project for? 👇🏻 One of the reasons for this project was the need to have a general overview of the biotechnology situation in Europe 🌍 and, in particular, in each region. 📌In order to get this picture, a whole work package was designed: The Strategic Implementation & Roadmapping of the project. The information we aim to obtain from this phase of the project is: ▶ Opportunities, challenges and needs of the agri-food sector. ▶ Identification of regional biotechnological strengths and expertise by identifying relevant research and technology organisations (RTOs), companies, etc. capable of addressing the challenges of the agri-food industry. ▶ Identify existing barriers and obstacles to the rapid adoption of biotechnology in the agri-food sector. ▶ An overview of the availability and equipment of living laboratories, pilot facilities and technology platforms. ▶ Regional strategies for biotechnology development, relevant projects and available regional funding. GEA has begun construction of its technology center for alternative proteins in Janesville, Wisconsin. Scheduled to open in 2025, the center will scale up the production of novel plant-based, microbial, and cell-based foods. “This investment underscores our commitment to innovation and sustainability in the food industry,” said Arpad Csay, who leads GEA Group's new food activities in North America, at the groundbreaking ceremony on 8 May 2024. The center will house pilot lines for cell cultivation and precision fermentation, bridging the gap between benchtop and commercial production of alternative proteins. “The technology center will offer foodtech businesses a platform to develop and derisk their processes to ensure technological and commercial viability. It helps startups in the sector implement a business strategy that requires little upfront investment.
