As we approach the end of Diabetes Awareness Month, BMHC would like to highlight the significant impact of this condition on those affected by it. Diabetes is a disease that does not produce enough insulin to convert food into energy. This chronic disease can lead to other health issues that can be fatal, but there is hope with regular screenings, diabetes management, and lifestyle changes. It is imperative that we do not take this lightly, as fatality data for Blacks, Indians, and Hispanics is significantly higher than the White population, and we see enormous increases in amputations—up to 4 times more in Blacks than compared to the rest of the populations. Perhaps for reasons to do with underlying biological and cultural differences, but we have seen some positive outcomes with changes in diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Did you know there are 5 stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD)? Each stage is determined by the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), which measures kidney function. As CKD progresses, eGFR declines. At the final stage of CKD, also known as kidney failure, patients will need a transplant or dialysis to survive. Symptoms at early CKD stages can be easy to miss, causing progression to later stages without notice. Unfortunately, by then it's often too late, and the damage is irreversible. The best defence? Prioritise kidney screening and adopt a healthy lifestyle! Regular screenings can catch issues early, and by managing risk factors like diabetes and hypertension, which are major causes of kidney failure, you can safeguard your kidney health! 🥗🏃♀️🔎 #NKFsg #BeKidneySmart #chronickidneydisease #kidneyfailure #healthishealth #sghealth

Help us spread awareness of diabetes in your community and across the country. Today is #WorldDiabetesDay where advocates recognize the challenges to live a healthy life for those diagnosed with diabetes. At PRC, we interview over 1,000 Americans routinely to understand the trends and disparities in our society. This month, we released our National Health Brief that focuses on the well-being of people with diabetes. In this brief, you will find: 🌐Diabetes is most prevalent in southern states, with 31.9% of residents having either diabetes or prediabetes. 📈 Prediabetes diagnoses have risen by over 5% since 2020. 🩸 80% of individuals with diabetes also cite high blood pressure, with over 60% also citing high cholesterol. This year’s #WorldDiabetesDay explores “Diabetes and Wellbeing” and the importance of holistic healthcare as part of long-term diabetes management. Diabetes and #CardiovascularDisease (CVD) are closely linked. CVD risk factors such as obesity and hypertension are common in people with diabetes, increasing the risk of cardiac events. At #DaiichiSankyoEurope, we believe targeting these risk factors through lifestyle changes is critical to reducing long-term CVD complications in people living with diabetes. Read below to discover the three pillars for holistic wellbeing in those with both diabetes and CVD diseases 🤝

🌟 A Wake-Up Call on Diabetes 🌟 My mum sent me this link, to a Channel 4 News program about diabetes. I often receive articles on blood sugar, diabetes and all things health related due to my personal interest in wellness, especially after my own encounter with the disease a few years ago, which led to my near obsession with metabolic health. Few articles however, hit home like this one. It was emotional watching people suffer from severe, life-changing situations caused by Type 2 diabetes. No one should loose a limb or go blind due to a lack of awareness around the impact of the foods we eat. Sadly, they also reported that 3.2 million people in the UK are currently diagnosed with Diabetes (not counting those with Pre-Diabetes, which likely triples this figure). The other week I was having a coffee with Ben Calderhead (our Co-Founder) and Sam Feltham from PHC (Public Health Colaboration - an amazing organisation you should follow for the science of all things metabolic health), and Sam shared a devastating statistic: 25 people lose a limb every single day due to Type 2 diabetes. Let that sink in — 25 people every day in the UK alone. What’s worse is that this epidemic is mainly driven by diet and lifestyle which means it’s preventable. Blood sugar goes out of control when high level of carbs are consumed (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all snacks in between), leading to insulin resistance, which is at the heart of many if not most metabolic diseases, including diabetes. Surely this largely preventable tragedy calls for increased awareness about our food choices? We must do more. #DiabetesAwareness #MetabolicHealth #PreventiveCare #HealthWellness https://lnkd.in/e5gr59tA

The U.S. has seen a significant rise in diabetes cases since 2000, highlighting a critical public health challenge. Diabetes affects millions of Americans, increasing the risk of severe complications and putting immense pressure on healthcare resources. The burden of diabetes in the U.S. has grown substantially, with nearly 1 in 6 adults now affected, up from about 10% in 2000. This increase is linked to factors like aging, obesity, and lifestyle habits. The CDC reports higher prevalence among men and older adults, and a striking disparity across education levels. Additionally, around 4.5% of adults remain undiagnosed, putting them at higher risk for complications such as heart and kidney disease. The American Diabetes Association called it the most expensive chronic condition in the U.S., estimating the cost of diagnosed diabetes in the U.S. in 2022 was $412.9 billion, including $306.6 billion in direct medical costs. https://lnkd.in/gamDrnh8

⚠️Did you know that more than 1 in 10 people worldwide are affected by some stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide? It is estimated CKD may affect more than 850 million people worldwide – two and a half times the size of the United States population. Known as a "silent killer", #ChronicKidneyDisease (CKD) is a progressive loss of the kidney’s ability to filter blood, affecting how the body eliminates toxins. Up to 90% of kidney function can be lost without a person showing any symptoms. Early diagnosis can make a difference. If detected in its early stages, the deterioration of kidney function can be slowed or delayed, potentially reducing the associated cardiovascular risks. Check out the images in this post to learn 3 key factors that impact #KidneyHealth. Kidney health starts with awareness. As a leader in renal health, we at Fresenius Medical Care reinforce our commitment and social responsibility to increase #Awareness and education to reduce barriers to better kidney care and overall health. 💙 Share this post with your community and help us spread such important information. #KidneyHealthForAll #LoweringBarriers #EducationToProtect #WorldKidneyDay #WKD2024
