In the February 2024 Housing & Health issue of Health Affairs, Kierra Barnett of Nationwide’s Children’s Hospital and her team of coauthors document the history of structural racism in Linden, a neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. Linden is a neighborhood characterized by high rates of unemployment, crime, and disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes. The authors contextualize these disparities through an exploration of 100 years of discriminatory state and local policies, particularly those related to housing, that have shaped health in Linden, Ohio. These policies include racial deed restrictions, redlining, blockbusting, mass incarceration, and the subprime lending crisis. Barnett and coauthors advocate for structural racism- and discrimination-informed strategic community development initiatives to promote lasting change in Linden. Let me be clear: I'm not making a political statement here. I found this article to be a great teaching moment about the importance of #appearances and #authenticity. This article in the Chicago Sun-Times discusses how the city of Chicago is moving people out of a "visible" homeless camp in preparation for the upcoming DNC meeting in August. Some of the residents have been there for at least 2 years. Gee, all of a sudden, the city is concerned for their welfare? Coincidence? I think not. My point is that people can sniff out self-serving claptrap a mile away. I would find it hard to believe that anybody believes one word of what these politicians, and their spokespeople, are using as their "reasons" for the sudden relocation. My fellow #dentists, this is a valuable learning opportunity. Be ethical, transparent, and honest in all your dealings with others. If you want your team and patients to respect and trust you, "do what you ought to do, when you ought to do it, whether you want to or not, with no debate"...or excuses! (I learned that from Walter Hailey, Steven J. Anderson, and Suzanne Black YEARS ago.) In other words, walk your talk. We are excited to share another incredible initiative supported by the Oakland County Health Equity Council grants to address the ongoing systemic and racial health inequities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic! This time, we're spotlighting a project that addresses transportation challenges for individuals in Pontiac. Recipient Story: "Our inspiration came from working with Oakland County’s Transportation Taskforce, Dustin McClellan, several other organizations, and SMART. This taskforce focuses on transportation options for individuals with no access or the inability to use public transportation. Thanks to the Health Equity Mini-Grants, we can offer free transportation to qualified Pontiac residents. While we have general funding for Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, and Monroe Counties, this grant specifically targets high-need areas like Pontiac and supports low-income individuals, seniors, and people with disabilities who face transportation barriers." Impact Statement: This project directly addresses the critical transportation needs of Pontiac residents. By providing free rides and mileage reimbursement, we are reducing isolation, enabling access to essential services, and fostering community involvement. The ability to pay drivers ensures continuous mobility for our participants, helping them maintain independence and improve their quality of life. This initiative not only meets immediate needs but also sets the stage for future funding and expanded resource opportunities. Together, we are breaking down barriers and empowering our community to thrive. 🌟 #PontiacCommunityFoundation #OCHECGrants #CommunityImpact #TransportationAccess #HealthEquity Oakland County, Michigan Government

At Operation Gateway, advocacy is at the core of all we do. We are staffed with Community Health Workers and one of the primary components of effective community health work is TRUST!!! How do you keep the flame of trust burning??? T R A N S P A R E N C Y Check out our year to date graphic. You will see how we use our resources. We have served 167 members and this is how the money spends!!! We are wide open with it because we love our community and we appreciate all of our partners. We do our best to connect with the case managers in the prison but they are short staffed and we work around by way of in reach process that OG COOP created in partnership with Brent Bailey at the Local Reentry Council and we also get community referrals from family members and other partners that provide services. We do what we have to do and CHWs are experts at figuring it out. IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW!!! We don’t just talk about “wraparound services,” we do this. Practical, tangible tactics!!! It’s only the beginning! #reentry #prisonreform #reformreentry #equity #access #impact #transparency #flyhighisaaccolemen #vayastrong #healthyopportunitiespilot #oghop #impacthealth #impactrecidivism #stigmaslayers #sdoh #minoritymentalhealthawarenessmonth #mentalhealthishealth

Exciting News: Bringing Justice Home has updated our mission statement! Inspired by our recent strategic planning process, we're thrilled to announce a revised mission statement that better reflects our organization's core values and goals. Our new mission statement is: Bringing Justice Home fosters the health and wellbeing of all Louisvillians, prioritizing the needs and gifts of those marginalized by disability or health status, and engages the community in the work of justice. This updated mission statement: Broadens our reach: It affirms our commitment to serving all Louisvilleans while emphasizing our dedication to those facing health disparities. Highlights our values: It underscores our belief in equity, inclusion, and community engagement. Emphasizes systemic factors: By replacing "medically vulnerable neighbors" with "those marginalized by disability or health status," we acknowledge the systemic and societal forces that contribute to health inequities. Today we launch the write up from our thought leadership round table with NHS Cheshire and Merseyside ICB. We hosted a network of people working in the delivery of housing and transforming care for people who have learning disabilities and/or autism. Invited guests represented the NHS, a Local Authority, Registered Providers and experts working in the delivery of specialist housing. The debate gathered thoughts and ideas around; how can we collaboratively overcome the barriers that are blocking the creation of supporting housing and create a better way forward. We covered: - Why are people staying in hospital longer than necessary? - What are the barriers for Registered Providers in developing supported housing? - How can we overcome the barriers? From our discussion it seems there are several things that need to change. There is an initial need to raise awareness of the actual problem. Government officials and Homes England need to be fully briefed on the problem and the barriers, which are contributing to the lack of suitable housing development and the delays in the planning and management of this. Part of the problem also lies in the areas of funding, and the restrictions that are set, but if adapted could have the potential to bring about the critical funding change that is needed. Isn’t it time we gave the appropriate level of consideration to work together, to reduce the number of medically fit people living in hospital, by raising awareness of the issue and working collaboratively to find solutions to overcome barriers and place people into the homes they deserve. Do you all know what "civic health" is? RWJF's 2024 County Health Rankings is zeroing in on this: "Evidence shows that participating in our communities, whether through volunteering or joining neighborhood groups, strengthens our social connections and sense of belonging which in turn, benefits our physical and mental health" and highlighting the importance of public spaces that facilitate civic engagement and social cohesion. Yet another way that we can plan and design for community health! https://lnkd.in/gtvp7zDB
