This is the reason my job exists. Back in 2012, right at the end of my degree, I had a horrendeous, stress/mania induced psychotic episode. I was in Malta with my family, celebrating my graduation before the graduation had even happened. I was returned home on a flight with my uncle, and when I landed I was taken straight to a mental health ward. I was in there for 5 weeks, and I was told that I would probably never work again, at least not for the next five years. Three months later, after moving back in with my parents, I found myself hideously depressed; no longer knowing who I was or what I should do. My persuit as a songwriter was abruptly halted, and I just had no clue where I was going. My mother suggested volunteering at a local school and helping out with music. I was barely well enough to do this, but the kindess and understanding of school staff kept me going. I managed to get an interview at Lancashire Music Service. I was so pleasently shocked at how inclusive the process was, and soon I became a freelance guitar and keyboard tutor. Bare in mind, this wasn’t yesterday. In 2012, attitudes to mental health were still taboo. Fast forward 12 years, and now I exist to improve the lives of those who suffer ill-mental health, through music/mental health practice. The road is never easy for anyone with any kind of ill-mental health. Still now after 12 years of incredible SMT support and the providence of space to form new and different ideas, recognition, career progression etc etc, my self-esteem can very quickly take a serious tumble, and suddenly there is hell before my eyes even in the best environements. I'm learning that a high level of self awareness, and evidence based thinking patterns provide the nessecarry, congruent self-care for my ADHD/Bipolar brain. This has also resulted in new things being discovered and I’m now being assessed for ASD. The more I connect with new people, the more I realise that the one thing anyone with any kind of complex condition can do to be a little more understood, is to prioritise self-awareness, and genuineness above everything else. It is the sage of what and who you truly are. As terrifying as that can be, and as “on-guard” one must sometimes be in this interesting world we live in, being real is often all we can have in common. What better self awareness than creativity?! I find that the one thing I CAN do, regardless of ill-mental health severity, is be creative. When I was in the hospital, I had my guitar. Even when I was locked deep in psychosis, I still knew how to play my guitar. I didn’t know anything about music/mental health practice back then, but I do know that once I had my guitar, the memories and thought patterns were far more “me” and I soon had a reason to recover. We creatives have a responsibility to utilise the true power of creative practice to change lives. I am always here to listen to any ideas that bring creativity and mental health together. ❤️
