Minister, take failing municipalities to court to provide water South Africa’s water crisis demands urgent action. 47% of water treatment systems are in critical or poor condition, while only 14% meet a baseline standard. Meanwhile, 68% of sanitation systems are at high risk, and 41% of our water is lost to leaks. This is not the South Africa we envision, where basic rights like water are upheld. https://lnkd.in/dYnzcqB6

In 2020, alarming data revealed that 31% of people in Haiti practiced open defecation, posing significant health and environmental risks. At SOIL, we're committed to changing this narrative, and this reality, by expanding access to safe, dignified sanitation solutions that keep people from safe from preventable sickness. We're combatting the sanitation crisis in Haiti by expanding access to dignified and safely managed sanitation - and transforming waste into an environmental solution. #EndOpenDefecation #SOILForHaiti #Haiti

In collaboration with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and eight Water and Sanitation Community Forums (WSCFs), and supported by the Water Research Commission (WRC), IWMI’s project on ‘Institutionalizing inclusive community-led planning of water supply in Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Water Services Development Plan (WSDP)’ examined the institutional issues that seem to ignore ordinary community members in South Africa's under-resourced settings. Based on this experience and evidence, the project recommends: 🏛️ Institutionalizing WSCFs in the IDP structure 🔄 Revitalizing the IDP 💧 Promoting active community participation in the water sector. SDG 6 focuses on ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, addressing issues such as water scarcity, water pollution, and lack of access to sanitation facilities. Access to clean water and sanitation is critical for public health and sustainable development in South Africa. By investing in water infrastructure, promoting water conservation, and improving sanitation facilities, we can ensure that everyone has access to safe and clean water. Let's prioritise water security and sanitation for all, safeguarding the health and well-being of our communities. #CleanWater #SanitationForAll #WaterSecurity
