This week was the kick-off meeting for the 2025 Bow Valley College research project. BVC students will be researching two topics for us for their final capstone project. 1. Barriers to Accessing Mental Health Support in First Responder Communities: Identifying challenges first responders face when seeking mental health support and suggesting improvements to outreach. 2. Volunteer Recruitment, Engagement, and Retention in Peer Support Programs: An analysis of what motivates volunteers, and strategies for improving recruitment and retention. Stay tuned for progress updates in the new year! #BVC #PeerSupport #Research #BOTGAB

“It’s not just about adults not understanding anymore. Many young people are finding solutions devised by adults to address our youth mental health crisis are actively harming them.” Poignant words from Ananas Mustafa, Director of Programs with Colorado Youth Congress (CYC) and member of our current youth wellbeing community of practice here at Gary focused on identifying more avenues for youth to offer peer-to-peer support to one another. The research on this subject is clear: Not only do youth-to-youth peer support strategies help young people in distress, they also benefit the individuals providing support. What’s more, young people are often in some of the best positions to assist their peers, as they can often identify signs of struggle, understand the community issues their peers are grappling with, and notice warning signs before adults. With that research at heart, the learning agenda we worked through this cohort to establish has been simple: What if adults got out of the way and gave young people more opportunities to support themselves? The learnings have been illuminating, and it's been an honor to work alongside all six members of this cohort, which include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado, The Center on Colfax, GALS Denver, Struggle Of Love Foundation and Wezesha Dada Center Learn more about the work and key early takeaways here: https://lnkd.in/gCvPk5K3 #mentalhealthmonth #youthmentalhealth #youthwellbeing #peertopeersupport #earlyintervention #prevention

At Crawford, we emphasize well-being alongside policy education. Whether it's students, academics, or staff, the pressures of navigating public policy issues, academic challenges, or professional growth can weigh on mental health. The R U OK? initiative serves as a powerful reminder to check in with our peers and foster a supportive community where meaningful conversations thrive. Public policy isn’t just about systems - it’s about people. Through our work on mental health policy, social inclusion, and community well-being, the Crawford School understands the importance of creating supportive environments for all. This R U OK? Day – and every day - let's show our care by asking our colleagues, friends, and loved ones: "Are you OK?" Learn how to ask: https://lnkd.in/guhQkQG #ruokanyday

I had a great time presenting at the i2i conference. The IOM says that schools are the second best place for prevention, with the first being parents. Health literacy with the subsets of mental health literacy and digital media literacy are key evidence-based subjects that need to be taught in schools. We must focus on strength-based approaches and give valuable skills like emotional regulation and important competencies like social awareness. These are the ingredients for emotionally intelligent adults who know how to maintain and keep relationships, which are the cornerstones for physical and mental health. This brain-based approach will assist in creating an integrated brain that is protected from addictions not only because they live a well-balanced life, but also because they will realize that the truth to happiness is the relationships we have with those around us. #preventionworks #problemgamblingprevention

11 states have joined together to create the first Youth Mental Health Corps. AmeriCorps reports that the initiative will aid youth and create jobs addressing the mental health professional shortage. https://buff.ly/3QOO9VG. Youth civic engagement can be associated with worse mental health, but access to community can help. Read our research here: https://buff.ly/4dBAk6S #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

The Ámaxa Mental Health First Aid At Ámaxa, we are passionate about creating original and innovative initiatives that bridge gaps in important social impact areas. Mental Health First Aid is one of our newest initiatives. It is currently broken down into 2 focuses: -The first focus is to create a database of resources at the country, state and local level so that anyone struggling can easily find help, resources and community. -The second focus is to begin outreach and interviews with researchers and educators in the youth mental health field with the intention to build a mental health course that can be implemented in schools worldwide. We hope to bring mental health education and practices into classrooms through peer to peer conversation, teaching and learning! Not only will this project engage in impactful work, but it will also give members of our cohorts the opportunity to hone their research, analysis and communication skills – all of which will be transferable for them as they begin their journeys into the professional world. When it comes to seeking mental health services, black children and teens are more likely to receive it in schools than in outpatient programs. The main problem however is that schools in predominately black neighborhoods are less likely to have mental health services available in comparison to schools in predominately white neighborhoods. Here at Access Psychology Foundation, we are committed to increasing equitable access to mental health treatment and training for people of color and underserved communities. Learn more about how we are closing the gaps in access to mental health care by visiting us online at www.access-psychology.org/. #accesspsychologyfoundation #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthtreatment #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthforall

The stats on mental health amongst our kids and teens are tough to hear: ❗ Suicide rates among young people aged 10-24 have jumped by 62% from 2007 to 2021. ❗ 1 in 5 children deals with a mental, emotional, or behavioural disorder. ❗ Every day, 4 teens are admitted to inpatient programs in most children’s hospitals, but the demand is far higher. The shortage of mental health providers is worrying, leaving many young people without the support they really need. 😔 But my team and I are determined to make a difference. With our fun, interactive theatre and role play, we’re empowering kids, teens and adults with the skills they need to ask for help when they need it most. With our programs, they'll gain the tools and confidence to navigate tough times. Know a school or workplace that could use our support?
