Mohammed Ozigis, Serge Wich, Adrià Descals, Zoltan Szantoi, and Erik Meijaard have released an important new study that sheds light on the complex dynamics of oil palm expansion in Central Africa and its implications for biodiversity and conservation efforts. As global demand for vegetable oils grows, this research underscores the critical need for informed land-use planning to balance agricultural development with ecological preservation. Key Insights from the study include that over 1,000 km² of tropical forests within great ape ranges were converted to oil palm between 2000 and 2021. Alarmingly, nearly 170,000 km² of forest loss occurred within the IUCN ranges of African great apes over the same period, with agricultural expansion playing a significant role. Furthermore, the study reveals that smallholder oil palm plantations are more extensive than previously reported, highlighting their contribution to deforestation trends. "Our results shed light on how one can enhance the ecological value of oil palm plantations and at the same time fulfill economic interests. Smallholders should seek to increase production efficiency through careful intensification, while conventional farms should adopt reduced management practices tailored to local needs. Elements of more ecologically sustainable management include increasing vegetation complexity and using mechanical rather than chemical weed control. Moreover, enriching oil palm plantations with native trees did not reduce yields compared to conventional plantations and might be a promising strategy to further increase the ecological value of oil palm cultivation. Finally, maintaining forested areas in the landscape is essential for sustaining biodiversity and ecosystem functions in oil palm plantations." Indeed, we're up against many challenges in the 21st century, especially in making sure our farming can keep up without hurting the planet. One big issue is that croplands have been temporarily/permanently abandoned. This situation has caught scientific interest because it can help and hurt, from restoring natural ecosystems to affecting food security. With my Ph.D promoters Prof. Jeroen Meersmans et al from Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech and others from #CAAS, we have deeply explored the complex interaction between cropland abandonment and recultivation across the Yangtze River basin, in central China in our latest article published in #Remote Sensing MDPI. Our findings revealed notable cropland abandonment, yet a significant portion of abandoned land is lost due to recultivation. 🌾CN🌏 This study lays the basis for policies that balance ecological protection with food security, offering essential data for evaluating strategies that address both concerns. As we navigate the complexities of agricultural sustainability, understanding these land use dynamics is crucial for crafting solutions that ensure a resilient and productive future. https://lnkd.in/eUNwWdrs #RemoteSensing #LandUseChange #CroplandAbadonment #FoodSecurity #ClimateRegulation

The memo mentions that - "Promoting the bioeconomy is important for the competitiveness and success of the whole EU". I am knee deep in - working with Irish stakeholders on a variety of bioeconomy opportunities and the more I do the more I realise the simplicity and elegance of leveraging these types of solutions. Don't let the word simple confuse you into thinking they lack in innovation, in fact it is just the opposite as technology is driving and underpinning the approaches. You should all definitely get onboard with the Bioeconomy!

🌿Unlocking the huge potential of the global seaweed market 🌿 Last year, the World Bank published the Global Seaweed New and Emerging Markets Report, emphasizing seaweed farming as one of the most promising markets for the planet, people, and global economies. In the report, ten high-potential global seaweed markets were identified, with a projected growth of an additional USD 11.8 billion by 2030. There's one key aspect we agree with: the seaweed sector has enormous potential, which has remained largely untapped until now. We know that seaweed-farmed products can deliver new solutions in fabrics and plastics, can provide ecosystem services such as bioremediation and supporting biodiversity, and can generate socioeconomic benefits in local coastal communities. 🌿At Kelp Forest Foundation, we are researching giant kelp's potential to help sustain or boost biodiversity, provide ecosystem services such as bioremediation, and whether it can sequester carbon long-term. We are also researching how 100% giant kelp-produced biostimulants can help improve soil biodiversity and health. 🌿 New analysis by Global Witness and Trase highlights palm oil as the top contributor to tropical forest loss among commodities consumed by Americans. This underscores the urgent need to address the environmental impact of palm oil production, which often involves clearing vast rainforests. Efforts to curb this footprint are gaining momentum, with importing nations like the EU enforcing regulations. However, tackling deforestation requires more than regulation – it demands rethinking farming practices for sustainable agriculture. Let's prioritize solutions that balance economic interests with environmental preservation. #Deforestation #PalmOil #Sustainability 🌴🌎 https://lnkd.in/exakvaKy.

Félicitation à l'équipe de Jacques Avelino pour cet article Perennial woody crops, which are crucial to our diets and global economies, have the potential to play a major role in achieving multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals pertaining to biodiversity conservation, socio-economic development and climate change mitigation. However, this potential is hindered by insufficient scientific and policy attention on perennial woody crops, and by the intensification of perennial crop cultivation in the form of monocropping with high external inputs. In this Perspective, we highlight the potential of properly managed and incentivized perennial woody crops to support holistic sustainable development and urge scientists and policymakers to develop an effective agenda to better harness their benefits. https://lnkd.in/eHYq9DZQ

Healthy soils = Stronger Economies 🌱🪱🌐 Greater biodiversity is the key to healthier soil. And healthier soil is the key to a range of environmental and economic benefits. Here’s how to achieve them. Soil biodiversity plays a critical role not just in the production of food but in maintaining clean fresh water, recharging groundwater reserves, and collecting and storing carbon. Soil needs sufficient water, healthy living organisms and plant residue, and the right temperature—all benefits associated with regenerative agriculture. Increasing the health of the soil in Germany, for example, would lead to upwards of €14 billion in economic benefits annually. All stakeholders must pay far more attention to the benefits of soil biodiversity and push for more research, supportive policies, and incentives.
