Your company isn't too small to IPO. I’m always surprised by the number of entrepreneurs that I talk to, who have no idea that an IPO is a viable exit strategy for them. Most entrepreneurs believe the Wall Street myth that an IPO is reserved for unicorns or companies with billion-dollar valuations. 𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩. That’s what my book, The Entrepreneur’s IPO is all about. Dan McClory, from Boustead Securities, has an amazing way of putting it. He calls it, ‘The Art of the Possible’. Dan shares his wisdom in chapter one of my book, and I’m so grateful for his input. The Big Day has arrived! The listing day is a momentous day and in some ways like a birthday and grand unveiling day for many companies. It’s the day the company is initiated into the public markets and begins trading as a public entity. It’s a huge moment for any company and the culmination of years of hard work. Newly listed IPO companies face challenges like market volatility, investor skepticism, reporting, and intense competition for capital in the current market. It’s a huge responsibility, which is why I always recommend that companies begin planning early and ‘acting’ as public entities, well before going public. I discuss all the realities of the ‘big day’ in chapter 11 of my book and welcome the expert knowledge of Paul Dorfman, the head of listings at the NYSE. There’s nothing quite like the experience of IPO day and hope all entrepreneurs get to experience it in their lifetime!

A large number of entrepreneurs never plan their exit. Yet here's what typically happens to businesses: • 50% don't survive 5 years. • Only a third successfully pass to family. • Just 10-15% get bought • And IPOs (listing on stock exchange)? Less than 1%. Here's the truth: Your business will have an ending - planned or not. The best founders know this and build with the end in mind. So, what's your exit plan?

There are many myths of Wall Street. The one I often refer to is the myth that you have to be a Unicorn to IPO. The myth of needing to be a unicorn, while inspiring, doesn't necessarily align with the reality of most businesses. For many entrepreneurs, success is better defined by sustainable growth, meaningful impact, and the ability to adapt and thrive over time. There are zebras and camels also entering the market! Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying an IPO is for everyone. But… The capital markets are more accessible than you might think, and you don’t need to have billion-dollar valuations to get there. An IPO offers entrepreneurs access to transformational capital and liquidity. Are you interested to know more? Let’s talk!

Decoding the Perfect Timing for a Successful IPO Taking your company public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) is a big step, and timing it right is essential. Here’s how to decide when to go public: 1. Understand Market Trends The market plays a huge role in IPO success. For example, Renaissance Capital reports that U.S. IPOs raised $29.6 billion in 2024, a 50% jump from 2023, showing that markets were improving. Picking a good time can make a big difference. 2. Check Your Finances Investors prefer companies with strong numbers. WilmerHale’s 2024 IPO Report found that 42% of IPO companies were profitable in 2023, up from 34% in 2022. Make sure your business shows steady growth and clear potential. 3. Be Ready for Scrutiny Being public means more eyes on your business. Strong leadership, smooth operations, and compliance with regulations are key to handling this responsibility. 4. Share Your Growth Plan Investors want to know how their money will help your company grow. A clear plan for expansion or new products makes your IPO more attractive. 5. Align with Industry Trends Timing your IPO when your industry is booming can give you an edge. Watch for trends or changes that could make investors excited about your business. 6. Get Professional Help Experienced advisors can help with pricing, legal requirements, and other challenges of going public. Their expertise can make the process much smoother. In short, choosing the right moment for an IPO depends on market conditions, financial health, and a strong plan for the future. With good preparation and timing, your IPO can be a big success. #ipo #businessgrowth #financialplanning #markettrends #growthstrategy #businesssuccess #entrepreneurship #startuptips #industrytrends

Here's the cover and blurb of my new book. Standby, pre-launch will be in two weeks. Please forward this on to anyone who might be interested. In IPO vs. VC author Paul Hickey takes readers on a thought-provoking journey to challenge the conventional wisdom of waiting for billion-dollar unicorn status before going public. Drawing on decades of experience and insider insights, Hickey unveils how small-cap IPOs offer unparalleled advantages for founders, VCs, and shareholders —accelerating growth, boosting liquidity, and opening doors to capital and global opportunities. This book demystifies the small-cap IPO process while providing actionable strategies to leverage the $4 trillion small-cap market, making a compelling case for rethinking the path to going public.
