The aviation sector risks missing its 2050 net-zero target as passenger demand grows and low-carbon fuel development lags. UK and Australia’s "jet zero" councils aim to drive greener aviation. Mark Toon of Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd argues their focus on incremental innovation won’t meet urgent emissions goals. "Offering guilt-free, zero-emissions flights would be transformative. Whatever the market dynamics, the urgency of the climate crisis is clear. Jet zero organizations hold the key to unlocking the type of change needed to make aviation sustainable — but only if they rise to the challenge." 💡Read more about this and other views on the #energytransition at Kathari News Perspectives: https://ow.ly/Kzgk50UmNXo

Four steps towards more sustainable aviation: remove clouds formed by contrails; slow down flights, upgrade planes, and ensure they’re flying in their optimal range; scale up production of sustainable aviation fuel; and explore new technology (e.g. hydrogen airplanes)

Can slowing down planes help cut aviation’s carbon footprint? 🛫 📚 A new study from the University of Cambridge suggests it can. By reducing flight speeds and improving contrail coordination, the aviation industry could significantly cut its environmental impact over the next five years. One of the strategies included in the study is to reduce flight speeds by 15%, reducing fuel burn by 5-7%. ⏰ On the other hand, this might add 50 minutes to a transatlantic flight. The university’s analysis indicates that current policies leave the aviation sector far from achieving its climate commitments. The report outlines realistic and sustainable steps that, if implemented, could put the industry back on track towards meeting net-zero emissions by 2050. We already know that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) reduces CO2 emissions, but a new study confirms that it also reduces the non-CO2 emissions that impact climate change like ice crystals and soot. https://bit.ly/4cdFHrt #sustainability #sustainableaviation

The momentum continues to build… the single easiest and cheapest mitigation to aviation’s climate impact that you’ve never heard of. We have a good idea when, where and how to do it already. https://lnkd.in/es4Gpx3k Perhaps it will be airline and aircraft lessor investors who will eventually force it to happen, when they accept the numbers in the industry’s climate plans don’t add up?

What is a quick way to reduce the climate impact of aviation? It's definite not the inherently problematic "sustainable" aviation fuel, but rather tackling contrails. Mike Berners-Lee sets out how big an impact this would have, and how quickly it could be done in the Financial Times today 👇 off the back of a report we published at Opportunity Green. The really big question though: will the European Union be brave enough to stand up and actually regulate the damage caused by international aviation for once? https://lnkd.in/eugywT-x

Five ways to make aviation more sustainable right now. While aviation is a relatively small contributor to global emissions, the industry is predicted to grow at 4% per year for the foreseeable future. https://lnkd.in/eMShtyFe

Driving Climate Solutions Through Demand It's no secret that demand plays a pivotal role in shaping our world, especially when it comes to addressing climate change. As consumers, our choices have the power to steer industries towards sustainability. From renewable energy to electric vehicles, we've witnessed how increasing demand for eco-friendly options has driven innovation and propelled the adoption of cleaner technologies. Now, let's take to the skies. Aviation, a sector often scrutinized for its carbon footprint, is ripe for transformation. The concept of "flight shame" has emerged, reflecting a growing awareness of the environmental impact of air travel. But here's the silver lining: this collective consciousness can serve as a catalyst for change. As more travelers prioritize sustainability, airlines are under pressure to innovate. Enter hydrogen, electric propulsion,, and SiriNor. By harnessing the power of demand, expressed through movements like #FlightShame, we can accelerate the development and adoption of sustainable solutions for aviation. Together, let's turn our concerns into opportunities for a greener future. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Aviation #ClearTheAir #FlyFossilFree #GuiltFreeTravel 🌱✈️

🚨 Big news in aviation & climate policy! According to Abatable, demand for CORSIA carbon credits is set to outstrip supply by 2030. As aviation emissions rise and tech solutions like SAF face hurdles, the sector could face significant challenges. 📉✈️ The CORSIA scheme, starting its first phase this year, aims to curb emissions growth from a 2019 baseline. But with a turbulent start and a mandatory Phase 2 coming in 2027, airlines will need to adapt quickly. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/d-zPMEpY #ClimateAction #Aviation #CORSIA #SustainableAviation
