In the Sustainability Awards, we are announcing our runner-up of the category “𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁” 🌍✨ 🥈Runner-up: Soil erosion prevention and land creation in China by Zonghuai LI, 𝗟𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗼 and 𝗫𝗶𝗮𝗼 𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴. 🌍 Embarking on a mission to transform the local ecosystem near Calderys’ Chaoyang site, the project team tackled environmental concerns and uplifted the wellbeing of communities. 🚀 Addressing persistent soil erosion and challenging weather, the team conducted a comprehensive study on the site. Natural trenches worsened erosion and limited plant growth during dry seasons, calling for innovative solutions. 🌳The project team transformed 3.7 hectares into terraced areas, combating soil erosion, and they planted over 1,500 trees, including robust species and fruit-bearing varieties. Close collaboration with the local community and government was crucial in garnering support for the dedicated environmental protection efforts. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family." - Kofi Annan.  But what if that progress came at the cost of our planet?     At the QI Group, we believe in education that nurtures both minds and the environment. And we are proud that this sentiment is echoed by the eco-warriors at our education arm, Quest International University (QIU)!  Recently, our QIU community kicked off 2024 with Treevolution@QIU, an initiative that saw them collaborate with local authorities to carry out eco-preservation activities at the Kinta River Basin, a vital waterway in the state of Perak, the home base of QIU.  Together, they transformed the area by planting trees, cleaning up litter, even building a brand-new playground!  Yes, degrees open doors, but a healthy planet opens them wider.   Via smart collaborations and capacity-building initiatives, the QI Group and QIU are committed to working towards United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), not just because they're trendy buzzwords, but because they represent the future we all deserve.   From ensuring clean water (SGD14) to fostering life on land (SGD15), Treevolution@QIU initiative is a tangible step towards achieving these critical goals while moulding our future generation. It was very inspiring to get some time with the world youth parliament for water. Melati Wijsen and I talked about the art of implementation and how we all are change makers and how we all are part of a democratic process of governance. Participating in implementation and setting clear principles of regional collaboration has helped me learn how do direct large groups of people towards a common goal. Driving change on a regional scale reduces complexity and makes human environmental systems less complicated and more manageable. - I have really enjoyed the process of changing systems on a regional and provincial level. It is so satisfying to see and feel real tangible results. -- The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic(monkey) emotions; medieval(very very old) government institutions; and god-like technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall. E.O. Wilson Restoring our environment means we must take charge of our local and regional governance and face our environmental problems together. This takes building trust and creating movement and providing quick wins to overcome doubt. At Eco-Mantra we will continue to work on environmental problems around energy, water, waste and biodiversity. And we will continue to build meaningful partnerships that truly want to drive change. 1. Define clear group boundaries. 2. Match rules governing use of common goods to local needs and conditions. 3. Ensure that those affected by the rules can participate in modifying the rules. 4. Make sure the rule-making rights of community members are respected by outside authorities. 5. Develop a system, carried out by community members, for monitoring members’ behavior. 6. Use graduated sanctions for rule violators. 7. Provide accessible, low-cost means for dispute resolution. 8. Build responsibility for governing the common resource in nested tiers from the lowest level up to the entire interconnected system.

A Leader : Guardian of the Future The role of the new leader of the Republic of Indonesia and regional leaders in protecting natural forests and biodiversity is of paramount importance. Indonesia boasts some of the world's most diverse ecosystems, housing a significant portion of the planet's biodiversity. Preserving these natural assets not only safeguards the environment but also ensures the sustainability of vital ecological services upon which human well-being relies. Key to this endeavor is a comprehensive understanding of green development, climate change, and the protection of indigenous rights. The new leader and regional authorities must recognize that economic growth can coexist harmoniously with environmental conservation through sustainable practices. This necessitates policies that prioritize renewable energy sources, promote eco-friendly industries, and enforce stringent regulations against deforestation and habitat destruction. Moreover, climate change poses an imminent threat to Indonesia's ecosystems, exacerbating issues such as forest fires, biodiversity loss, and rising sea levels.
