Excited to publish this essay -- my take on the explosive recent interest in Gen AI (despite its many limitations) coupled with the false "Metaverse is dead" narrative (despite massive, growing user numbers). I believe it's built not on savvy business sense, but on a cultural/generational bias: "Very few people who grew up on immersive interactivity, however, are part of the demographic who largely comprise the investor class. Their flight to AI may seem like a rational apprehension of new technology, but the dream of creating thinking machines predates 'Snow Crash' by decades if not centuries. Not having grown up on interactive immersion as an integral thread in their social fabric, it’s difficult for them to see the appeal of metaverse platforms like Roblox and Fortnite, and easy to dismiss it all as 'just online games' -- even when the evidence of their continued growing mass adoption is right in front of them. "I’m convinced this cultural/generational blind spot is causing Silicon Valley’s leadership to miss the next great creative / technological shift of the social Internet -- even when it’s often happening right down the hall in their own kids’ bedroom..." I am sure you will find this paper on the theme #BeingHuman in a #DigitalWworld: Questions to guide the internet’s evolution” a very useful read. This research-oriented paper has been written by three very enlightened professionals from Singapore, viz. Duleesha Kulasooriya Michelle Khoo and @Michelle Tan https://lnkd.in/dzVf6-rJ. I am unfortunate that I could read this paper about a year after its publication.    According to these three authors, “With growing calls to halt AI development and widespread cynicism over the metaverse, we need a framework for visionary businesses, regulators, and society to help shape the future of an internet that enhances, rather than supplants, our humanity.” In light of the #ThreePolarities that businesses, regulators, and society have to grapple with as the internet evolves, the authors have dealt with three very crucial questions: § What does it mean to be #Human amid these challenges? § How can businesses balance the push and pull of providing directed offers or experiences while also empowering humans to chart their own course? § What is the right balance of individual or industry self-regulation versus government regulation? How can we preserve meaning while working to increase utility? As we think about the inherent #Humanness that needs to be protected, enabled, and amplified in the next evolution of the internet, society, businesses, and regulators need to weigh their decisions based on what it means to be human. To create a useful definition of humanness, the authors have analyzed several traits that define us as human beings and distilled them down to four core traits that broadly encapsulate who we are. These #CoreTraits are fundamental to the development of an internet that promotes human well-being, serving as a frame of reference that allows us to ask the right questions about how to preserve our humanity while employing new and increasingly sophisticated technologies on a more immersive, instantaneous, and intelligent internet

What's common between fruit flies and digital technologies? Both are great candidates for studying the #phenomenon of #evolution - while fruit flies are the cornerstone of genetic research, digital technologies offer similar non-biological equivalent, owing to their fast evolution cycles. In fact, if you don't follow some #technology for more than a few quarters, chances are high that you may never need to study it at all...for it might already be on the quiet path to obsolescence by that time. And one of my favorite topics in this regard is #metaverse (as is a host of similar technologies that have failed to take off in last five years). Not only does metaverse offer a great study in how excessive #hype (what else do you call it when a prominent company changes its name around it!) can wreak havoc, but when combined with lack of a solid use case (who among us wants to attend board meeting of the upper torsos floating in mid-air?) and excessively priced hardware, you get a series of #doa products. Interestingly, or shockingly - depending on which school you go to - none of these are new to mankind! The beauty of first principles is that under the hood, that's what everything is really composed of. But the problem is when people wear rose-tinted glasses, they can only see how to build even better glasses, both literally and metaphorically - perhaps with #headmounteddisplays and offering all kind of digital "realities", such as #AR, #XR, #MR, #XR....literally anything but the real-world "reality" that need to be seen in the first place - i.e., what is the real gap in the market? The problem in tech world is that tech is seen as the first-class citizen, whereas, if anything, it needs be right behind #people at number one, followed by #solution at number two, and then finally tech. And just like biologists continue to learn from fruit flies, I hope the techies continue to learn from experiments from digital technologies. After all, mistakes and #failures are ephemeral, but #learnings are forever! https://lnkd.in/gZWCXzsz
