I have both been on and worked for boards. Both can be equally frustrating. Whether the board is responsible for a profit-driven business or a non-profit public benefit organization doesn't matter. The company executives feel that the board just doesn't get it, and the board cannot understand why the executives don't execute. Boards aren't in the trenches, so no, they don't always get it. Executives don't like to have someone looking over their shoulders as they fight the fires, and they are expected to deliver rocket ship-type results each month. It is easy for both sides to criticize, and empathy rarely is employed. In my experience, "Engage Early" is needed to set expectations. Define what success and failure look like. Define what each person in the room is accountable for, including board members. I have been a board member without accountability; you feel undervalued and don't want to invest your time in regular meetings. Founders, make sure each board member has a purpose and hold them accountable for that just as they must hold you accountable for the agreed upon expected results. The other takeaways: "Collective Intelligence" and "Strategic Support" will naturally follow when everyone sitting around the table has a purpose for being there and is accountable to the others regardless of titles.
