What about the matting in Sports? Rens Blom former World Champion pole vaulting is the CEO of ESSX Europe. Next to elite performance, ESSX is focused on sustainability. Take their "vaulting pole as a service" circular business model. A great example. When you jump you fall down. With pole vaulting that would be on a mat. Did you know these mats contain up to 1300kg of Polyurethane foam? That has to change if it is up to Rens. Perfect project for Brightlands Sportinnovator Center with their partners CHILL, Zuyd Hogeschool | Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, Mullens Sports & Health Innovations and Sportinnovator. Today was the kick-off for a feasibility study to explore the possibilities. Pretty sure we will find the perfect knowledge partners on (and beyond) the Brightlands Chemelot Campus the coming weeks to solve the problem and make impact together. As you can imagine the solution will be applicable to all kinds of mats in Sports... Interested? Get in touch with us! #polevaulting #matting #sustainability

On April 15, the #NERM conference kicked off with a PhD pre-event co-organised by the #RecaP project and the #ESNI community supported by the Biorefine Cluster Europe. 15 PhD students involved in the RecaP project presented the different aspects of #phosphorous cycling, capturing and recovering. Five focus groups then elaborated on different aspects of P cycling and processing during an in-depth discussion, followed by 3 group discussions on the #sustainability of #nutrientrecycling , how to bring recycled nutrients to the market and how to best interact with #stakeholders. The discussions were very lively and even though several barriers were still identified to the implementation of the discussed #technologies, these exchange opportunities are definitely an important part of the way forward for creating a more sustainable world. It’s day 2 of the #InnovationFestival and today we have athlete and commentator extroadinaire Steve Cram. While being interviewed by Nigel Watson and Angela MacOscar He begins with describing how innovation in elite sport over time transfers down to use in everyday sport. This builds on Nigel’s opening where he set the aspiration to halve (yes halve) the time from taking ideas from the NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) Innovation Festival from 4 years to 2 years. That’s some aspiration. At the #InnovationFestival24 and in particular our sprint #BuildingTomorrow24 will be focusing on our long term goals today. This maybe shifts our frame for the opening to make it even faster than I had originally planned or thought. Steve also talks about how athletes take risks all the time. Those risks are what Steve describes as data informed as well as insight fed. The feeling the athlete has plus what the data is telling them. Thinking (and feeling) confident, optimistic and safe to take those risks. We need to be risky today. You ready?

📢It's time for our segment Endless Possibilities!📢 HEAD's prototype racquets to incorporate bio-circular carbon fibers! 👀 The Austrian company is developing prototype tennis racquets and pickleball paddles made with Toray Carbon Fibers Europe’s bio-circular carbon fiber certified by the ISCC Plus standard. Toray notes that “bio-circular” here means that the raw materials used to manufacture carbon fiber are sourced from recycled and/or natural materials such as sugar beet waste. 🤩 Both companies are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of their activities. The decision to build a partnership to develop new racquets was also based on Toray’s ability to provide bio-circular carbon fiber for this project. Toray Carbon Fibers Europe obtained ISCC Plus certification in September 2023 (read “Toray obtains ISCC certification for European carbon fiber production facilities”) and is able to supply bio-circular carbon fiber using the mass balance approach, which means less CO2 emissions. The Toray Group aims to build a new materials ecosystem that harnesses bio-circular raw materials to make products that, at the end of their life cycle, are able to be repurposed or recycled. 😉 For Head, the goal is to achieve maximum sustainability in all its processes, from manufacturing to shipping. The company has initiated the development of prototype racquets as part of its ReThink program to create performance products designed to reduce their impact on the environment. 👏 Source: CompositesWorld #managingcomposites #thenativelab
