The conclusion of this year's #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence coincides with Human Rights Day. This day is a powerful reminder of how human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective and transformative force for good. At Brisbane Youth Service, we see firsthand how the power of human rights can transform lives. For the young people we work with, particularly those experiencing or at risk of homelessness due to domestic and family violence (DFV), claiming their rights means having access to age-appropriate supports, securing safe housing, breaking the cycle of violence, and building healthy relationships. Through our trauma-informed services, like our Young Women, Families and Safe Relationships programs, we support young people to heal, reclaim control and develop the skills they need to to navigate life’s challenges with confidence. We believe that when young people are empowered to know and assert their rights, they can thrive in their communities and create the futures they deserve. This 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Human Rights Day and beyond, we stand with young people to build a world where their rights are respected, protected and fulfilled. #NewFutures #HumanRightsDay #OurRightsOurFuture #EndGenderBasedViolence

🚨 1 in 2 Children Are Victims of Violence – The Power to End It Is in Our Hands 🚨 It’s a heartbreaking statistic: 1 in 2 children around the world are subjected to violence in various forms, from physical abuse to emotional harm. This staggering reality highlights an urgent need for action and change. At the United Human Rights Organization, we believe that every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment where they can grow and thrive without fear. Ending violence against children is not just a goal; it’s a moral imperative and a collective responsibility. We must unite our efforts to address and eliminate the root causes of violence. By raising awareness, providing support, and advocating for stronger protections, we can create a world where every child’s rights are respected and upheld. Let’s harness the power within us to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. Together, we can make a lasting impact and ensure that no child has to endure violence. The power to bring about change lies in our hands – let’s use it wisely. #EndChildViolence #ProtectOurChildren #HumanRights #ChildSafety #DignityForAll #SocialJustice #Empowerment #TakeAction #Equality #StopTheViolence #UHRO

On May 5th, we observe the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (also known as Red Dress Day). This day honors and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit individuals who have been disproportionately affected by violence in Canada. The red dresses symbolize the missing and murdered, inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black’s powerful REDress Project installation. These empty red dresses serve as a poignant reminder of the ongoing crisis and the urgent need for action. Let us stand together, raise our voices, and advocate for justice and safety for all. Between 2009 and 2021, the rate of homicide against First Nations, Métis and Inuit women and girls was six times higher than the rate among their non-Indigenous counterparts. Homicides of Indigenous women and girls take complex pathways through the Canadian criminal courts, from police laying or recommending charges to court processes and outcomes. Nearly four years after the release of the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and two years following the release of the National Action Plan, only two of the 231 Calls for Justice have been implemented, while an implementation timeline has yet to be released. WEAR RED To mark this day, join us by wearing something red to express our solidarity with Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ victims, survivors and families. Last week, the Global Ministerial Conference to End Violence Against Children brought leaders together to drive bold commitments toward a safer world for every child. It’s a reminder that this issue doesn’t just need global policies—it needs global attention. To turn turn awareness into action and ensure no child has to live in fear, I am calling more public figures such as John Oliver to step up and bring the issue into the public eye. Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, a day to stand against abuse in all its forms. As a parent to both daughters and a son, this fight is personal. I want my daughters to grow up in a world where their worth isn’t questioned, their voices are heard, and their safety is a given—not a privilege. I also want my son to grow up understanding the power of respect, equality, and advocacy. Raising children who will challenge injustice, champion kindness, and stand up for those who cannot is how we break cycles of abuse. Let’s remember that domestic abuse doesn’t just affect individuals—it ripples through families and communities. Today, I stand as an advocate, a parent, and a believer that change is possible. Together, we can build a world where women and girls are safe, respected, and free to thrive. #stopdomesticabuse
