The Culture and Education Committee (CULT) of the European Parliament has officially formed after a month of intense negotiations.
The Committee plays a pivotal role in shaping the cultural and educational landscape of the European Union, and in particular: protecting and promoting cultural and linguistic diversity, safeguarding cultural exchanges and artistic creation, developing audiovisual policies, collaborating with third countries on cultural matters.
𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Total Members: 30
𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 (ffor a two-and-a-half year term):
• 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿: Nela Riehl (Greens/EFA, Germany) 🎉
• 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝗲-𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀:
o 1st: Bogdan Zdrojewski (EPP, Poland)
o 2nd: Emma Rafowicz (S&D, France)
o 3rd: Diana Riba i Giner (Greens/EFA, Spain)
o 4th: Hristo Petrov (Renew, Bulgaria)
📍𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Nine Member States currently lack representation on the Committee, with six others represented only by substitutes.
📌 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗽𝘀: Four BSR countries have no MEPs on the committee: Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Sweden. Two others are only represented by substitutes: Finland and Latvia. This highlights the need for more diverse geographical representation in CULT's future actions.
The constitutive meeting of the Committee on Culture and Education took place on 23 July 2024. The first regular meeting of the CULT Committee will take place on 4 September 2024.
