As 2024 comes to a close, we're taking a look back on some of our most-read content this year. Our next spotlighted piece is a report written by BSR’s Chief Impact Officer Laura Gitman and Managing Director, BSR Innovation Group David S. Korngold: The CSO at a Crossroads: Three Paths Forward for Sustainability Leaders. While more visible and valued than ever before, heightened expectations and pressures are placing the Chief Sustainability Officer at risk of becoming overly focused on compliance at the expense of innovation and strategic foresight. Amidst a backdrop of rapid changes in the sustainability landscape, BSR interviewed more than 30 CSOs to hear their perspectives on this dichotomy and understand where success can be found through professionalization and integration of this function. From these discussions, three potential paths forward emerged through which CSOs can: illuminate new business opportunities; advocate for systemic change; and ensure that sustainability remains a priority at the highest levels of corporate decision-making. In this report, go inside the mind of a CSO and explore avenues for maximum impact in the field of sustainable business: https://lnkd.in/eMSexCbe #sustainablebusiness #sustainablefuture #businesstransformation #governance

✒ In today's dynamic corporate milieu, sustainability🌳stands as a pivotal cornerstone of strategic vision. ✔ 👉 The urgency of our environmental and societal challenges demands 🚧 not just acknowledgment but proactive engagement from businesses. It is within this context that the synthesis of sustainability and profitability emerges as a paramount directive for top management professionals. 🍁 The seminal collaboration between MIT Sloan Management Review and the Boston Consulting Group unveils a compelling narrative: 👉 While 90% of executives perceive sustainability as imperative, a mere 60% of enterprises have operationalized sustainable strategies. 🌩 This dissonance underscores a critical imperative for corporate leaders—to pivot from mere recognition to strategic integration. ✍ Crafting a robust sustainability agenda isn't merely an act of altruism; it's a judicious investment in long-term viability and competitive advantage. 🙋♂️ By cultivating a sustainable ethos, organizations mitigate risk, foster innovation, and fortify stakeholder trust. The strategic deployment of sustainable practices isn't a cost center; it's a conduit to enhanced profitability and enduring relevance in a rapidly evolving marketplace. #CorporateLeadership #StrategicVision #SustainableGrowth #BusinessInnovation #StakeholderTrust #EnvironmentalStewardship #SocialResponsibility #ThoughtLeadership #ESG #Sustainability #Safety

Companies should neither underestimate nor get overwhelmed by the waves of disruption the sustainability shift brings now and in the future. Systemic transformations happen when major socio-economic trends and breakthrough innovations amplify each other, simultaneously triggering waves of disruption at many levels. Systemic shifts are tough to navigate but follow similar patterns, and most organizations have been through them before. The report Catching the Wave, which we've co-authored with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, lays out the lessons that can be drawn from past disruptions, the multiple truths companies must confront, and the barriers holding companies back. It also contains a practical framework - synthesizing the insights, successes, and observations of 130 business and sustainability leaders – offering a set of immediate actions to help identify and overcome barriers to change, expose material risks, capture new value, and future-proof the enterprise. Let this sink in... "The uncomfortable truth for the corporate sustainability world is that there is a very real risk that – with the exception of a few companies – the majority of businesses, and the ecosystem of advisors and advocates that support them, are actually contributing to the problem, by creating the impression that we are making good progress, and thereby delaying required radical changes to markets and the policies that frame them. Hero projects, long term pledges and disclosures are all part of the solution but are not going to move the dial while it remains profitable to damage nature and society." This is from one of the leading think tanks on sustainability, the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). Also... " 🌏 Business needs policy to design out the conflict between long-term sustainability and short-term commerciality; 🌍 Corporate leaders need to build social engagement and buy in for transition; 🌎 Business needs to compete aggressively on superior sustainability performance. It is time to move on from trying to put ‘sustainability thinking’ into business and instead start putting ‘business thinking’ into sustainability. We need to shift to an agenda of competitive sustainability." Couldn't agree more. Highly recommend the attached thought provoking report! #sustainability #leadership #transformation #businessthinkingintosustainability https://lnkd.in/dPAZSt8t

Why should Sustainability be on every CEO's desk? Last week, our Head of Corporate Sustainability division, Elvyra Mikšytė , shared some powerful insights during her talk at the Tvarus verslas conference, hosted by Verslo žinios. Elvyra's key message - Sustainability isn’t just an add-on; it’s a strategic priority that needs to be driven from the top. CEOs play a critical role in steering their teams toward long-term sustainability goals. Here are some key takeaways from her session: 🟢 Sustainability starts with strategy – It’s more than reporting actions. The sustainability strategy must align with regulations and it may require transforming the business model to adapt to sustainability goals. 🟢 Challenges CEOs face: Lack of ESG expertise both within companies and in the market Difficulties in involving the whole team Gathering ESG data effectively Aligning ESG with broader business strategy Balancing ambition with practical capabilities 🟢 Opportunities ESG strategies open up: Stronger business and management practices Better relationships with stakeholders and partners Enhanced reputation and competitive edge New opportunities for innovation and business models Attracting investors and securing funding Corporate sustainability strategy needs to be part of the overall business strategy. Without the CEO’s involvement, the vision can get lost in execution. This is why CEOs must lead the charge—whether working with internal sustainability leaders or external consultants. #Sustainability #ESG #Leadership #SustainableBusiness #CorporateStrategy #CEO

Not everything is good for your company. Not everything suits to your company. Not everything is necessary to be implemented. The today’s ESG team challenge is to analyse and define 4W and 1H: What Where When Who How

🌍 It's time to rethink how sustainability and business intersect! 💼 In a new report from Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), Lindsay Hooper, CEO of CISL and Paul Gilding, CISL Fellow, emphasize the urgent need for a shift in corporate sustainability strategy. Instead of focusing solely on individual company actions, we must aim for a ‘whole of economy’ transition that supports net zero, nature-positive, and circular solutions. ⚠️The reality? The sustainability crisis is deepening despite decades of commitments and innovation. We need to align business strategy with sustainability goals to drive the systemic change our planet needs. Key insights: ❌ Policy must eliminate the clash between long-term sustainability and short-term profits. 🤝 Business leaders should focus on building social engagement for the transition. 📈 Companies must compete on superior sustainability performance for long-term success. Let's move from putting ‘sustainability thinking’ into business to putting ‘business thinking’ into sustainability! 🔗 Read the full report here https://lnkd.in/gYn4wEE8 Sibusiso Nkomo Richard Calland Sibusiso Nkomo Susan Njoroge KHANYI MLAMBO #ChangingTheStory #BusinessLeadership #CompetitiveSustainability #CISLBusinessLeadership
