Demystifying Urban Planning. Our Atlanta office is truly a microcosm of HKS, Inc. even as we house 7 unique disciplines under one roof. To demystify the Urban Planning dimension of the Cities & Communities practice, we shared stories from 5 cities (Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Houston, Austin, and Dallas), to illustrate the possibilities of macro-thinking. Thanks to Lenise L., Zack Lofton, and Patrick Kennedy for giving us a window into their journey of using data, policy, economics, guidelines, and infrastructure to set the stage for architectural opportunities. The discussion highlighted the inherently complex and multifaceted nature of urban planning, but the greater value emerged from the questions posed by the audience of architects, interior designers and technology gurus! What do you wish Planning could do for our cities and communities? #urbanplanning #careerjourneys #cities #communities

Around the country, hallway space is shrinking, according to the latest trend report from John Burns Research and Consulting. "In Texas, we are designing our homes with fewer hallways as much as feasible. There are many benefits of this trend for new home construction, including more square footage for homeowners to enjoy, a better flow around the home, more natural light, reduced energy costs and savings on construction costs," shared our VP of Value Engineering & Architectural Services, Odeh Kheir, in an interview with Forbes. "If we are going to create and nurture positive, productive, civil conversations, we clearly need to create opportunities and spaces that support that goal—an idea Kate Murphy mentions early in her book 'You’re Not Listening: What You’re Missing and Why It Matters.' “'People used to listen to one another while sitting on front porches and around campfires,' she writes on pages 7 and 8, 'but now we are too busy, or too districted, to explore the depths of one another’s thoughts and feelings…Instead of front porches, today’s homes more likely have front-facing garages that swallow up residents’ cars at the end of a hectic day. Or people live compartmentalized in apartments and condominiums, ignoring one another in the elevators.' "It’s an idea I’ve come across in a variety of settings—including books and articles about architecture; community and collaboration; and training-teaching-learning—and one that is expressed eloquently and passionately by several people I admire tremendously...." --From "Kate Murphy on Listening: Creating Spaces for Conversations," a set of reflections posted on my "Building Creative Bridges" blog To read the entire piece, please visit the blog at https://lnkd.in/gqyyWQZ2

Should you focus on the past... or is the future what matters? As someone who works closely with construction professionals in Ohio, it's inspiring to see the incredible work being done to revitalize historic buildings and neighborhoods in downtown Cincinnati. Take the Willkommen Project in Over-the-Rhine (OTR) for example. It’s more than just a preservation effort—it’s a forward-thinking approach to combining affordability, good design, and historic renovation. By restoring 11 historic buildings and adding modern infill, Willkommen is bringing much-needed affordable housing to a historic area while maintaining its rich architectural fabric. (https://lnkd.in/gtHCnia8) Historic preservation isn’t just about preserving the past—it’s about shaping a future that’s both sustainable and economically sound. Cincinnati shows how we can blend innovation, heritage, and community to create lasting progress. If you’re passionate about urban revitalization or work in construction, I’d love to connect and discuss how these projects are changing the landscape of Cincinnati! 🌍 #UrbanRevitalization #HistoricPreservation #CincinnatiConstruction #ConstructionJobs #Sustainability #BuildingTheFuture
