If water is the lifeblood of the planet, rivers, lakes and wetlands are the hard-working systems that keep it pumping. These systems feed communities, shape cultures and sustain the diversity of life on Earth. For too long, we’ve undervalued our freshwater ecosystems. But there is hope. Freshwater systems that are degraded can recover—and they can recover quickly. Fresh water is connected to everything TNC does. This #WorldWaterDay, like every single day we are committed to the protection, restoration and improved management of 2.5 million hectares of rivers, lakes and wetlands in Australia by 2030. We are lucky to work with amazing partners on the ground, funders and local communities to make an impact on precious freshwater systems in Australia. Together we find a way. #freshwater #waterconservation #worldwaterday

Today, Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Special Advisor for Water, announced continued investment by Environment and Climate Change Canada in support of the Lake Winnipeg Basin through Canada’s Freshwater Action Plan. This funding by the federal government celebrates the partnerships and ongoing collaboration driving efforts to conserve freshwater ecosystems in the Lake Winnipeg Basin. Thanks to this investment, Ducks Unlimited Canada will continue to support both water quality improvements and wildlife by securing long-term restorations and developing retained wetland areas. Did you know? The Lake Winnipeg drainage basin is home to nearly seven million people. 💧It’s #WorldWaterDay - a day to highlight the importance of fresh water and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Given the persisting dry conditions felt across southern Alberta, protection and conservation of freshwater is more important than ever for the health and success of our City and region. To support World Water Day and battle the risk of water shortage, we are calling on local businesses and residents to join us in conserving water because #everydropcounts. The City of Airdrie is proactively bolstering our drought preparedness by working closely with neighbouring municipalities, monitoring environment and policy conditions and developing plans to ensure readiness for our city, local businesses and residents. Locally, we are evaluating the efficiency of water usage by City facilities and operations and we are amending the Waterworks Bylaw to ensure alignment and consistency with regional partners which will result in improved effectiveness of water conservation. This year's theme for World Water Day, 'Water for Peace,' underscoring the vital role water plays in global stability and prosperity. Cooperation on water paves the way for cooperation on all shared challenges. Learn about how you can make a difference at https://lnkd.in/gM2DK8mJ 🌍

The five Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River play a crucial role in daily life for many North Americans, providing freshwater resources that underpin the prosperity and natural beauty of the region. With millions of us drawn to the area, community growth brings environmental challenges that must be continually addressed to maintain the health of these inland seas and their vast watersheds. On both sides of the international border, Ducks Unlimited teams are conserving and restoring wetland, grassland and forest habitats for all of us. Our mission has always been to conserve this habitat for waterfowl, but that’s only part of the value of wetland conservation. We protect wetlands and adjacent natural habitats—and those ecosystems protect us in return. Good News for Freshwater! Hot off the presses, The Nature Conservancy has launched its plan for the Norfolk Water Fund, a £30 million portfolio of nature-based solutions to tackle water challenges in the UK's driest county. Alongside partners at the Nature for Water Facility, Norfolk County Council, Water Resources East and Anglian Water Services, this fund will support water security, quality and flood risk management in the agricultural region. https://bit.ly/3UVKkkl And that's not all - The Nature Conservancy in New York announced a partnership with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to protect >14,600 acres in the Adirondacks and create a groundbreaking freshwater research preserve at Follensby Pond. https://lnkd.in/geFR7yGA The Nature Conservancy in Africa and partners launched the Western Area Peninsula Water Fund (WAPWF) in Sierra Leone, the first water fund in West Africa. https://bit.ly/3uRsd4D In Latin America there are 3 voluntary river areas conservation agreements led by indigenous communities which will protect 1,369 kilometers of freshwater, more than 580 hectares of vegetation. TNC Europe has established the United for Rivers coalition alongside partners in five countries, aiming to safeguard 400 kilometers of the world's last free-flowing rivers. https://bit.ly/3IbgbGm And, in a new report, our experts detail the role that nature-based solutions can play in adapting to a world of increasing floods and drought, finding that nature-based solutions can help reduce the risk of flood and drought in 1/3 of the places across the globe where flood and drought hazards are expected to increase due to climate change. https://bit.ly/42SV4SK #water #freshwater #nature

The International Day of Action for Rivers is observed annually on March 14. It is dedicated to raising awareness about the significance of rivers, as well as advocating for the preservation and celebration. On a daily basis, two million tons of sewage, industrial, and agricultural waste are released into the Earth's waterways. These challenges jeopardize not only the health of our rivers but also the well being of millions of people who depend on them. By taking action to save our rivers, we are not only protecting the natural world but also ensuring our own well-being. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that our rivers continue to flow freely, providing essential services for generations to come. #InternationalDayofActionforRivers #March14 #Waterforall #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

#EnvironmentalJustice #Favelas CONFRONTING THE TENDENCY TO REDUCE FAVELA RIVERS TO SEWAGE DITCHES "We began to interact differently with the environment. People remember moments when, as children, they were placed on bunk beds, benches or walls to avoid contact with the water. Adults were worried about losing the material objects they had worked so hard to buy, but the main fear was losing their children, washed away by the force of the water or afflicted by diseases resulting from contamination by dirty water." “I think it's important to address the memories. Many do not know that the river was once a place for fishing and playing.” — Marcia Esteves "Gradually, stories shifted from those of cooling off in the rivers, the memories of playing in the water and along its banks, and the food security that the waters provided. Little by little, conversations began to describe the river as a source of fear and death. It instills a constant sense of vulnerability, alleviated only by the support network the neighborhood provides in times of emergency." This is the final in a series of articles on water justice in the favelas available at https://lnkd.in/dsEd7Uie. It is also part of a series created in partnership with the Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies at San Diego State University, to produce articles for the Digital Brazil Project on environmental justice.
