In light of comments made by Donald Trump about Madam Vice President Kamala Harris, it's crucial to reflect on the importance of cultural competence in leadership. Cultural competence involves understanding, communicating, and effectively interacting with people across cultures. It is essential for promoting inclusion, enhancing communication, fostering collaboration, and building trust. Madam Vice President Harris, as the first female, first Black, and first South Asian Vice President, represents the rich diversity of our nation. Recognizing and respecting her heritage and contributions is vital. Leaders must demonstrate cultural competence by setting the tone for their organizations and communities, educating themselves about cultural differences, promoting inclusive dialogue, and standing against divisive comments. Let's commit to fostering cultural competence in our workplaces and communities to create a more inclusive and respectful society. #CulturalCompetence #Leadership #Inclusion #Diversity #KamalaHarris

Salvador. A week that redefined what's possible when we design spaces with intention and purpose. As I reflect on co-leading and co-designing this leadership retreat for Black women, I'm struck by how the city's energy amplified everything we created together. Here, where African heritage isn't a footnote but the headline, something magical happened. We didn't just talk about leadership - we embodied it. In a space deliberately architected for Black women to thrive, I watched barriers dissolve and possibilities expand. No code-switching. No explaining. Just pure, powerful authenticity. This is what happens when we design experiences that honor our whole selves. When every element - from the location to the conversations - is chosen with purpose. Where heritage meets ambition, and community meets growth. The transformation I witnessed wasn't just professional - it was soul-deep. Each woman stepped into her power, supported by the collective wisdom in the room and the ancestral energy of Salvador itself. To create spaces like this, to witness this kind of transformation - this is why I do what I do. This is lifestyle architecture in its purest form. #BlackWomenLead #LeadershipRetreat #BWelInBrazil

Two examples of inclusive leadership in action today and yes, I'm going to give these people their flowers out loud. 1 - Alix Sampson slipping into my DM's connecting me to an emerging queer leader. Flagging someone I'll have lots to learn from and I'm excited to meet. Alix used her network as a powerful tool to help distribute relationship capital. Our networks a form of power and privilege and something we can use for good, if we are intentional about it! 2 - Cath Stone sent a thank you email with specific feedback to a group of us working on a project. It was a great example of recognizing the collective contribution of the people who collaborated on it and a reminder of the impact we have together, in service of a common goal. Small acts are not always seen but they are powerful. It's what we do when the cameras aren't rolling that matters. What can you do today that redistributes power, shows that you see someone's uniqueness and unites people with each other and/or a common goal?

I am encouraged when I think of Black women in leadership having a deeper understanding of their values, strengths, and unique identities. I am inspired by the idea of leaders who feel empowered to prioritize their well-being without guilt or hesitation and who foster organizational cultures where everyone does the same. Identity- affirming leadership has the potential to cultivate leaders who set, pursue, and achieve their own goals with confidence and clarity. Ultimately, Black women in leadership who experience this type of workplace culture are able to thrive, creating and implementing visions for their work that are transformative and forward-thinking. “Look closely at the present you are constructing: it should look like the future you are dreaming” -A. Walker. If we want to live in a world where we all can live free, then let us assign ourselves.
