How Climate-Conscious Fans Are Changing the Game in Football Football clubs are under increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact as a younger generation of fans takes action on sustainability, according to a survey from carbon accounting company Carbon Responsible. 64 % of fans over 55 said they would take no action if their club performed poorly on sustainability and social responsibility, but only 12 percent of Gen Z fans and 15 per cent of millennial fans said the same. Among younger fans (aged 16 to 24), popular options for taking action include attending fewer matches, spending less money on soccer-related activities and purchases, and joining an online campaign to push for sustainability improvements 👉 66 % of respondents think more work should be done to improve sustainability in soccer 👉 65 % think clubs could make it easier for fans to behave sustainably 👉 64 % believe more focus should be on the sustainability credentials of club owners and sponsors 👉 67 % think soccer governing bodies should consider the climate impact of player travel when designing the fixture schedule When it comes to specific changes, the youngest fans prioritise long-term net zero goals and older fans strongly favour short-term improvements like reducing plastic consumption Context: The survey highlights a generational divide on climate concerns among UK soccer fans, with the vast majority of millennial and Gen Z supporters saying they would take action if their club fell short on sustainability. Football needs a "Marcus Rashford" of sustainability, but players are scared to speak about climate change for fear of being labelled hypocrites. Check out David Wheeler's interview in The Mirror below. David plays for Wycombe Wanderers Football Club and is the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA)'s Sustainability Champion. I had a good chat with David and others about this very topic at the British Association for Sustainable Sport Conference earlier this week. David also spearheaded the launch of his club's sustainability strategy and is not afraid to speak about issues like sustainability. He should be applauded for standing up to be counted. It's relatively understandable why we don't have more voices like this in the upper echelons of the game though, with the money, lavish lifestyles, and travel requirements of elite sport, coupled with the way our national press (and fans) love to scrutinise footballers more than most other high profile people, you can see why. Players should be able to talk about issues like climate change. Perhaps taking the stance of being 'on a journey' may feel more relatable and mitigate some of the criticism. Open and honest communication about not being perfect, but about recognising the issues and trying to improve. Who can criticise that? Other than this and perhaps a lack of education on the issues and solutions... what else can be done to change this and find some Marcus Rashfords of sustainability?
