Over the weekend, Qasim Mehdi presented cutting-edge research on geospatial placement of CO₂ and H₂ infrastructure for deep decarbonization in the Appalachian region. At the APPAM: Public Policy Analysis & Management Conference, he engaged with experts from leading institutions and universities, discussing strategies for co-optimization, regional challenges, and energy resilience. Robust Q&A sessions explored H₂ industry potential, infrastructure modeling, and environmental justice considerations. This conference fostered connections with policymakers and academics, allowing meaningful collaboration on deep decarbonization strategies. Check out the event here: https://lnkd.in/gsPTNj6S

The search for greener technologies entails intertwining a thread made of scientific competences and industrial practices, theory and implementation, trials and errors A thread to be unravelled in the labyrinth of industrial sustainability Global Power and Propulsion Society community at work to "innovate, integrate (solutions) and carbon mitigate Turbomachinery”
The GPPS Chania24 Technical Conference has officially begun, with Prof. Alessandro Corsini delivering the opening statement. His speech set the tone for the event, introducing the theme and ethos that will guide the discussions over the next three days in Crete. The Technical sessions commenced with a panel discussion on Sustainable Power Generation chaired by Bernhard Winkelmann with panelists with perspectives from both academia and industry. The discussions were topical and lively, demonstrating the conference's focus on bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application.

Thank you to all speakers and attendees for their contributions to the NWP SAF Workshop on Satellite Observations of the Earth System Interfaces, which took place last week at our headquarters in Reading, UK. The goals of this workshop were to: • Provide an overview of the various interface observations which are available to the NWP community as well as of the forward models which are being developed or are already in use to exploit this type of observations. • Assess the state of the art on the use of interface observations both in retrievals and in coupled data assimilation systems. • Understand the direction in which the scientific community is taking this important and complex problem. More information about the workshop and slides presented at the workshop are available: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eFc3NEG7 Working group reports will be shared with the community to identify key recommendations for NWP centres.

🏆 We did it! My PhD supervisor Clemens Thielen and me won the EURO Prize for the Common Good 2024 👨🔬 This would never have been possible without the support of our wonderful team, Inka Kaufmann Alves and Mirjam Lawens-Rotter from Hochschule Mainz - University of Applied Sciences, Stefanie Seiffert from igr GmbH, Michael Marques Alves from VG Enkenbach-Alsenborn, and Lars Stuckert from KMB. A big thank you for your support and cooperation during and after the project! 🚀 Congratulations also to the other nominees who had great projects. Ohad Eisenhändler and his colleagues showcased how Israel could transform its energy-mix towards renewables until 2050 and Ashraf Labib and his colleagues were part of an impressive project investigating search and rescue strategies in the arctic sea. I can only encourage everyone to also check out their work. ⚖ Also thanks to the jury consisting of Cathal Brugha, Claudia D'Ambrosio, Alec Morton, Eeva Vilkkumaa, and Ulrike Reisach and to EURO - The Association of European Operational Research Societies for offering the prize. Your engagement inspires all members from the OR-community to think how their science can make the world a better place. 🏛 I could probably tag half my LinkedIn-contacts in this post, which I will not, but I definitely have to thank my research group at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz (and I will not tag them all) since working with them is just awesome. Period. 🔜 What's next? Tbh, idk. I'm coming home from the conference with a bunch of new ideas and I will have to get them sorted in the next days. In any case, I spent my last months on evaluating how open-source APIs can be integrated into my software. First APIs are already connected and I'm hoping to release the next generation of rocket science municipal flood mitigation soon. Considering this year's floods, we all need it desperately. 🚅 By the way, I realized that taking the night train is a great way to travel to conferences. If you want to save about 1t of CO2 equivalents, or just want to avoid not getting onto your flight because it was overbooked, you're very much invited to take the railway next time.

First leg of the MSM129 expedition on Maria S Merian finished in St. John's Canada. Focus was on the Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung (DAM) - Kontaktprofil Underway data pilot project. Optimizing workflows for e.g. ADCP processing with https://lnkd.in/eww3Jiuh, real-time data transmission, metadata workflow from bridge controlled event log, and see what is needed to implement "adaptive sampling" into a non-science controlled underway data environment - using the case of "uncharted potential seamounts" - all relevant in the context of Pangaea.de, EuroGO-SHIP Project and ocean observing in general Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS)

Check out a new section of the SRNL website that highlights the work being done by SRNL to successfully develop, implement and deploy a new approach for robust monitoring of residual contaminants at groundwater sites. The ALTEMIS approach includes incorporating in situ, real-time early warning systems, deploying spatially integrative monitoring methods, and developing modeling approaches to improve the success and quality of monitoring, while reducing overall cost. https://lnkd.in/dTHvg57v
