A transformation is planned for our glass making facility in Alloa, UK. A series of upgrades will include gas-oxy combustion furnace tech, more renewable energy and more recycled glass. As the innovations come online, we expect a significant reduction in emissions – creating another contribution toward our goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030. Alloa has been making glass for nearly three centuries. Solar PV panel recycling is still in its infancy. Many of the panels installed historically were not designed for easy disassembly and recycling, not to mention the low relative volumes of panels being disposed of today from decades old installations, modern damaged panels, or more rarely modern decommissioned installations. This pales on comparison to the volumes we will be dealing with in the future however, as deployment globally seems to be growing exponentially, and there is still little consideration for design for dismantling. So we will have to Innovate new methods and processes to deal with existing and forthcoming waste streams. Hopefully this will include embedded processes and funding at the point of sale, rather than throwing the problem 20-30 years into the future.
