How do we measure dignity when it means different things to different people? Some patient experience questions nibble around the edges, such as Press Ganey questions like: Did your doctor listen to your questions or worries? Did your doctor include you in your care decisions? Did your doctor talk to you about your care choices? How do you think we should measure dignity in health care? The dictionary defines dignity as being worthy of honor or respect. If we asked patients if they felt respected during every aspect of their health care interaction, would that be enough? Not to mention: Are we willing to make the changes necessary to increase dignity? I love this call to action by Frank McClellan in his book, Healthcare and Human Dignity: I believe that the core value we should invoke to guide the development of new strategies and programs is the promotion of human dignity of everyone who seeks healthcare in America. To do this, we will need a diverse coalition of community members to develop, market, and implement the message of human dignity. I invite you to join me in thinking creatively about how we can infuse health care with more dignity for patients and staff alike.
