The last two days 10th and 11th December 2024, Malawi was among other SUN Movement countries that gathered in Mombasa Kenya to strategize on the upcoming #N4G Summit in March 2025. The Countries SUN Movement Networks including #UN, Civil Society, Business among others engaged with Governments SUN Movement conveners to identify key nutrition priorities for positioning with policy makers and translating them into #N4G country commitments. Some of the key priorities emerging included public financing of nutrition programs, strengthening nutrition supplies management in the countries health systems and improving diets.

Given the important role of traditional food markets in feeding our nations, it's imperative for stakeholders to increase investments towards this sector, whether they be infrastructural developments or enhancing the skills of vendors and consumers. Besides, we need to advocate for policies and regulations that protect and promote informal markets. These investments are crucial to ensure that markets not only survive but thrive, becoming more desirable centres of commerce and access to heathier diets. Food fortification is recognized as one of the most scalable, evidence-based, sustainable, and cost-effective strategies to address micronutrient deficiencies. As part of its national nutrition strategy to eradicate malnutrition, Sri Lanka was firmly dedicated to embracing fortified foods. To drive this commitment forward, the Presidential Secretariat Support Unit collaborated with key partners to host a comprehensive workshop focused on staple food fortification. The primary objective of the workshop was to convene essential stakeholders from the government, public sector, private sector, and international organizations. The forum facilitated discussions on existing efforts, pinpointed areas requiring attention, and established a cohesive roadmap to enhance staple food fortification efforts in Sri Lanka. Yesterday we had the honor of delivering a presentation to Members of Parliament during a roundtable discussion focused on Food and Nutrition in Uganda. Our Head of Programs, Mr Bwambale Bernard highlighted the alarming link between diet-related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and unhealthy diets, urging for more investments in nutrition to prevent malnutrition and NCDs. With a 99.8% funding gap for NCDs and 89.2% for nutrition supplies, the urgency is clear. Investing in nutrition yields significant returns, with every $1 invested generating $30 in economic benefit. This is why nutrition must be prioritized as a strategic, high-impact investment. During the session, MPs committed to fast-tracking critical actions such as: 1. Finalizing and endorsing the Nutrient Profiling Model (NPM). 2. Presenting the Food and Nutrition Bill on the floor of Parliament without delay. 3. Strengthening nutrition coordination and optimizing budget allocations for nutrition programs. Today, the Uganda Nutrition Civil Society Coalition (@FianUganda, SEATINI UGANDA @Cefroht and CONSENT Uganda will present these commitments, along with a petition, to the Speaker of Parliament. It's encouraging to see such robust support from our legislators and civil society partners in accelerating nutrition policy reforms. Does increasing women's decision-making on income lead to gains in nutrition? 🥬 Women remain central to household food and nutrition security. However, they continue to face constraints in accessing, controlling, and using credit and income. A recent study published in Agriculture and Food Security Journal highlights that #empowering #women in income decisions significantly boosts household nutrition and enhances food security at all levels. 🏘️ The authors examined data from 600 rural households in Cameroon and used the Abbreviated Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index and the Partial Least Square Structure Evaluations Modelling. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ekskSfz4 #Nutrition #FoodSecurity #WomensEmpowerment #SustainableDevelopment

Nutrition International is honoured to co-host the Delivering for Nutrition in South Asia: Connecting the Dots Across Systems’ (#D4N2024). At the opening plenary, Saiqa Siraj, our Country Director in Bangladesh, highlighted the criticality of looking at #nutrition as a multisectoral issue and integrating nutrition with broader systems such as #health, #water and #sanitation and livelihoods to achieve sustainable outcomes.  Touching upon the issue of climate change and nutrition in #Bangladesh, she emphasized, “There is a pressing need to address nutrition security and better integrate nutrition outcomes in climate policies and action plans in the coming days.” She was joined by P Sainath who delivered the keynote address, Biraj Patnaik as moderator and Buddhi Marambe as co-panelist.
